Brand new---waiting and worrying

Post by SleepyStarfish » Fri Jun 26, 2009 9:08 pm

I had my first sleep study two weeks ago, got the results early this week and had my second study wearing a CPAP last night. Now, I am waiting and worrying and anxious to get my machine and get this train rolling! The doctor told me I had a "very severe" case with nearly 900 apneas and 133 hypopneas in my first study. Last night I slept with the Quattro full face mask and did pretty well. I felt like I slept better but still woke up a lot. And, this morning, I still felt just as exhausted as always. I was hoping I would notice SOMEthing after a night on the CPAP. I guess I am expecting too much too soon. Now, I have to wait on the doctor and the insurance to get my equipment so it could be another week or even two. Today was my third day to take Provigil also. I GUESS I feel more alert in the afternoons. But, this morning, I took my pill at 7am and was still falling asleep at noon. Again, I am wanting too much, too soon.

I just need to vent a little to others who have "been there." I will be perusing the board here to see what all I can learn from everyone!!

Welcome aboard SleepyStarfish!

Lots of info here; great folks! Check out the posts and the "Our Wisdom" link in the blue bar at the top.

Others will tell ya...make sure you get a full data capable machine. "Efficacy" not just "user compliance" -- those are the buzzwords ya wanna know about your device. Mine collects only 'user compliance' data which is useless for fine-tuning your xPAP therapy *sigh*.

Your eager approach is great - and you have good cause to expect results. But you're right, is does sound as if you are expecting to cross the finish line before you're hardly out of the gate. You didn't get in the condition you're in overnight, and some consistent time of therapeutic treatment should produce noticible improvement. Do try to make sure in the beginning you are getting an adequate number of hours of sleep and even a little extra while you recover. I agree with those who mentioned the importance of a machine that allows you to track data to give you the best opportunity to get off to a good start. Something as basic as having too high a leak rate can derail effective treatment if one isn't aware of the issue. Keep us posted as you go along. Count this time as taking a prep course and read, read, read.

I completely appreciate where you're coming from. My experience was a whole lot of 'hurry up and wait'. It was appx 3 months from diagnosis until the time I actually got my machine. My doctor had THREE appointments (consult, PSG sleep study and titration sleep study) with an average wait of THREE MONTHS in between them. I was able to come in for cancellations, which is the only way I narrowed the wait down to 3 months.

When it's all over, it'll be worth it. I know the wait seems like forever now. I used to hate going to sleep knowing I had such terrible OSA!!!

Welcome to cpap talk ,there is alot of excellent information to be had here.
I kind of went thru the same thing as you are with the exception being that after my 2nd test I got to take my machine home the next morning, I Expected to start sleeping good and feeling better right away...WRONG ,well after three months now I'm finally getting good sleep and have lots of energy ,besides the apnea I also had another issue ,the dr gave me some pills and now i can get some rest ,they do (the drs) get it right once in a while. good luck!

Last count, "Total members 41,441", here with similar stories, so you are not alone! Insist on complete copies of all your studies, and your prescription. The more research you do here, the more likely you will get the most beneficial equipment, and make rapid progress.

After 2 weeks here, I had cpap.com overnight my equipment bundle, and immediately began tracking my data. Now I'm riding my bicycle, swimming a mile every day, and started weight training!

You will do fine. You are in very good hands here.
