Can you keep your mouth shut?

Post by LSAT » Mon Jun 22, 2009 7:30 am

My first 6 months on the CPAP I had no problems, but over the past 2 months I found myself leaking at the mouth. I'm currently using the PAPCAP chinstrap to stop my mouth leaks....It works. I'm wondering if it's possible to train your mouth/jaw to stay shut by using a chinstrap or taping? I mean, has anyone found that after using one of these methods they are able to discontinue them after a period of time?

Don't know about training the mouth or jaw to stay shut, but I do know you can train your tongue to rest on the roof of your mouth. I learned about this on this forum, and it is actually doable. When your tongue stays on the roof of your mouth, you cannot mouth breath or leak CPAP pressure through your mouth. Good luck!

When I'm awake and plant my tongue on the roof of my mouth and blow, air pours out of my mouth around the sides of my tongue. When I'm asleep I don't know what happens but I would wake up awith air escaping my mouth. Tape and chinstrap is the only thing that has worked for me.

When I first started with a nasal pillow mask, I had no problem keeping my mouth shut. However, after a couple of weeks I started noticing a very dry mouth and assumed I was mouth breathing. I assumed that since I was sleeping better, I just relaxed more and naturally "opened my big mouth". I went to a homemade chinstrap and eventually a papcap. Having been on the chinstrap for some months, I noticed that I can now sleep for a few days without needing the chinstrap. Since I naturally sleep with my tongue against the roof of my mouth, I apparently only need the chinstrap as a reminder and not a winch.

I eventually did train myself to keep mouth shut with just taping, yes a dry mouth is a sign of mouth breathing
my sleep studies with my nose only mask confirm that I now only nose breathe

Sleepyinindy........Why would you need the chinstrap if you are using a FF mask?
