I'm glad you are planning on getting the software and reader! You will not be sorry!
Cpap.com has a "bundle" price on their site. I think it's $199. That's for Encore Viewer Software (which is what you need for your machine) and the appropriate card reader.
It is easy to install and getting working on your computer. Even I did it, with a little help fromt he forum! If you have Windows Vista 64 bit operating system there may be installation problems but some here have worked around it. I have Windows Vista 32 bit and had no real problems at all.
Your DME probably won't sell it to you and probably doesn't even want you to have it! That's par for the course. Many of us here like to monitor and tweak our own therapy and you sound like you want to and can do that!
People here will help you with interpreting the data! If I were you I would go for it!
I can't add anything to the things that Pugsy has said in answer to your questions.
She is giving you good advice!

Re: Another newbie with "issues"!
I use Vista Home Premium (32 bit). I did get a couple of "publisher not verified" messages which are easily ignored. Not sure if XP would flag the same thing or not. Very simple software to use.
BTW I sent you a PM.
