Here is the letter I faxed to my doctor:

The results from my CPAP titration are now available. I have been doing a lot of research about sleep apnea and the various X-PAP machines available.
I believe an Auto-PAP with integrated humidifier and usage data capablity will serve me better than the traditional CPAP for the following reasons:
• I will be using this every night for the rest of my life, and I want to set myself up for success
• Studies indicate that the more info and control a patient has, the higher the compliance rate.
• My sleep arousals were different based upon my sleeping position.
• As I eliminate my sleep debt and feel better, I anticipate that some of my meds may change – many of which may be affecting my sleep patterns.
• The A-PAP will self-adjust to my needs.
• A heated humidifier is typically preferred by those with chronic sinus congestion
So to avoid any issues with the DME, please write a prescription for my sleep apnea equipment as follows:
1] AutoPAP with integrated humidifier and usage data capablity
2] Pressure ____ cms
3] Efficacy & usage data access
4] Nasal mask of patient's choice

Now let's see how the DME responds!

Excellent, you have done well!! Do you know what equipment that you want?? If so go to your DME of choice ("shop around if possible, to see which one has the equipment and best mask asst. to try out) and tell them what you want and be firm, if they resist go somewhere else. See if the DME will work with you to find the best fit and if you can bring a mask back to exchange for a better fit or design. Even at a good DME, you will probably have to buy the software yourself. If so shop around for the software and reader for your machine of choice. GOOD LUCK!!

Based on what I've read, I think I want a Resmed S8 Autoset II with H4i humidifier, but want to see, touch and hear the machines before final decision. My DME will have this and other similar machines to compare.

I am going to request the DME send out an RT who uses xpap to ensure I have the most knowledgeable person available. It may take an extra day or two to get the appointment, but I think it's worth it.

How does one keep track of people who use alias names?

I am tired today, but not depressed and no more reflux symptoms. Thank goodness.

Thanks for being there last night. I fell right to sleep after I left chat.
