I'm freakin exhausted today!!!

Post by Froro » Tue May 19, 2009 7:05 am

You'd think I slept without my machine last night. I checked the readout this morning (haven't downloaded it yet though) and my AHI was only 2.3. AI = .1, HI = 2.1, Leak zero, 8 hours of sleep

I figured it would be rediculously high as I struggled to wake up, struggled to get my eyes open and am still fumbling around this morning. I could easily go back to bed.

My allergies are starting to kick in full force now. I used my reactine (prescription strength), avamys, the sinus gel stuff last night, and Tried the neti pot twice during the day to open up my poor sinuses. (useless that thing proved to be yesterday, i ended up stuffier).

By the time I geared up for bed I had one nostril unplugged, and the other semi unplugged so I could breathe, and from the data it would seem I was successful but man....I feel like I've been hit by a truck (and I have incidentally been hit by truck before so I don't say that lightly).

I know I woke up a few times when I was on my side as the exhaust from the mask deflected against the mattress or something and straight into my eyes which was annoying.

I've had a few days like this, numbers okay but feel like hell (even when my sinuses were not an issue), any thoughts?

I'm in to see an ENT specialist in a couple of weeks and can't wait!!

How drowsy do the medications you take make you feel in the morning? On the other days you felt tired when you woke up were you taking the medication(s) then, too?

I know if something is bothering me (stress, anxiety); just because my airway stays open all night and I have little or no apneas does not mean my brain sleeps and relaxes. Every had one of those days when you did nothing physical yet you were exhausted (mentally) from something? The same holds when you are sleeping.

Those are just a couple of ideas to think about.

Froro,

I'm wondering if FLONASE would help until you get in to see the ENT. I use it when one or both of my nostrils are blocked. Several on the forum also use it. It's a spray, is a popular med, and requires an Rx. Your PCP would probably call it in to a pharmacy for you to tide you over.

I agree, but she is already using Avamys which is equivalent to Flonase.

as a total noob I have to ask how and where do you get this data?
I am not sure if my machine is capable... I got it a week ago yesterday.
my machine is the resmed elite (not sure of the model) but has an attached heated humidifier). Not sure of the
name of the mask, I am on my second one though. The obne I have now is nasal? It plugs the nostrils,
has a headband and chin strap.
The instructions I got on using it were minimal, as was the fitting. The sores between my eyes are still healing
but I am adjusting to the nose thing a lot better.
My cpap does have a display and a bunch of buttons, can I check my settings on it?

Hi guys. Thanks for the replies. Yup..Avamys is similar to Flonase.

Someone asked about meds. I've been on these meds since I started with cpap. Prior to sending me to the sleep clinic we tried the combo of Reactine and Avamys to see if my snoring was strictly sinus related. It reduced my snoring but not so much, hence the referral to the sleep clinic.

I have had blocked sinuses for years now and finally decided to do something about it. Never figuring I'd end up on Cpap as a result but hey...life moves on.

I am sooo plugged up today. It's always worse at this time of year courtesy of ragweed and such. I'm going to try the netipot again today (I hate that thing btw), and if that doesn't work I may go into the pharmacy and see if they have one of those spray can types that will give me a little more pressure than gravity.

Last night I had no particular stress. Was actually very relaxed after a busy weekend of birthday celebrations for my DD, fireworks, and such. As pathetic as this sounds I was too excited actually because I found authentic imported double devon cream and indulged by making scones and having my own personal little teatime, pretending I was back living in England. LOL. So stress? normal levels but nothing significant.

Froro, allergies do a lot more than stuff your nose up. They can cause inflammatory reactions body wide. I no longer have any of the typical kinds of nasal allergy reactions, like sneezing or stuffed nose, but can always tell when the pollen and mold counts are high, because I will be extremely fatigued, achey, crabby, sometimes have digestive issues, and used to have headaches. Sometimes I find that Zyrtec will help with some of the symptoms. I would be sure to talk to your doctor about possible other symptoms of your allergies, and what you might do to help.

There are a variety of supplements that help some people. Quercitin is a vitamin that has antihistime properties. Niacin helps with mast cell issues. Vitamin C also helps with allergy reactions. Magnesium down regulates inflammation. For me, and my sister, who has asthma, vitamin B-12 injections help. You can also take the B-12 sublingually (under the tongue). Only the hydroxycobalamine or methycobalamine forms of B12 help with allergy issues. You have to find out what type of reaction your body has, to have an idea what might help, but there are things to help. Make sure you ask your doctor what might work for you.

Hope you are feeling better soon!

Froro,

If you have a good ENT, you may have found what you need. I suspect you have enlarged turbinates and possibly a deviated septum. Surgery may be needed. I had both done and it has been one of the best things ever done to me.

When you see the ENT for the first time, he can scope your nasal passages all the way down to the vocal cords and get a good look at the turbinates, the septum and of course the vocal cords. It is a quick, easy procedure. For me, it was just a little bit of tickling from the flexible scope. The doc had a display behind my head to observe the conditions of the airway and there was a display in front of me where I saw everything the doc saw and described.

A couple of other points in the meantime. Avamys is a tiny dose of corticosteroid and some people are extremely sensitive. Make sure you use it early in the morning. Use in the evening could interfere with sleep architecture in people who are extremely sensitive.

Regarding the neti pot, both Dr. Eric Falcon of the board and my ENT say not to use the pot after 4:00 p.m. For some unknown reason, you may experience more congestion at night if you use it after 4:00. I suspect that all of the solution may take some hours to drain completely.

Before my turbinate reduction/septum correction surgery, the solution from the neti pot would slowly trickle from the exit nostril. After the surgery, the solution just pours right through. Proof that the nasal airway is really opened up.

Regards,
Rooster

Thanks guys.

Interesting about taking the steroid in the morning. I've always taken it at night. Both my pharmacist and doc told me to do it that way.

I went back to bed for a few hours this afternoon and feel a little better. Still tired but better. I wanted to go out and do some gardening but there was no way I was going outside with all that pollen floating about!!
