Has anyone tried...

Post by rogelah » Sun May 17, 2009 5:45 pm

those little bubbles from sheets of plastic bubbles, used to wrap a delicate item or as space fillers in boxes, to insulate the bridge of the nose against wear and tear? So far my only problem is the hard mask rubbing the bridge of my nose and making it sore. I tried a band aid covered with a piece of T-shirt cotton and a small dollop of triple antiseptic ointment to glue a double layer of cotton T-shirt to the bridge. The dollop of ointment/double T-shirt worked best.

Or maybe the lower straps of the mask need to higher on the back of my head. It seems that when I open my mouth wide to breathe it pulls the mask down tighter on the bridge of my nose.

I am unable to don the mask myself and need my caregiver's help. It is a riot with my Spanish (pretty good) and her English (pretty good) but when you are talking about something (the mask) and the words aren't in your current vocabulary, the resulting Spanglish and hand motions (my voice is muffled by the mask) make for a pretty good scene for Saturday Nite Live.

The bubble wrap is an interesting idea, but I think the plastic would irritate the skin - doesn't let it breathe.
I gave up on my original FF mask when I got a sore nose bridge and switched to nasal pillows, chin strap, Poligrip Strips, and dental wax across my teeth. It was a hassle using all that to keep my mouth closed, but after a few months my jaw was trained and I only needed the nasal pillows.
Definitely try the lower strap higher on the head, and try loosening everything.

If you are using the Resmed Quattro FF mask you may be having the same problem I had - the mask rides too low on the face and digs into the bridge of the nose. I simply substituted the strap from a Fisher Paykel mask (adjustable strap across the top of the head) to bring the Quattro up higher on my face.

If you don't have a Fisher Paykel mask, you could make a top strap using velcro. The idea is to pull up the entire strap assembly (which will raise the mask) so that the top of the mask fits at the very top of your nose.

If this is not an option, see about getting a different mask. There is no reason you should have to put up with one that does not fit comfortably.

I was thinking, first a dolop of triple antibiotic ointment, then layer of T-shirt cotton, then the bubble wrap. I'm trying it tonight.

Regarding the FP headgear strap I think I could try a velcro strap around the top of the forehead assembly, over the top of the head and around the top of the rear top of the headgear. I know they sell rolls of velcro strap in bike shops.

Thanks

How about a tiny piece of that flat rubbery stuff used under carpets?
