What to do for dry skin?

I've never really had dry skin before except perhaps for winter time when we lived in areas that got really cold. Now I don't know if it's my age or what, but my skin is dry and itchy all over. My face is particularly bad. I do have various skin conditions such as psoriasis and dermatitis, but this doesn't seem like that. It just seems like dry skin.

I've been putting cream on during the day, but then at night when I wash it off, my face gets dry again. Makes it miserable to sleep. But if I put the cream on before bed, my full face mask leaks.

What should I do?

I also have dry skin and use a FFM.I use WalMart's brand of Oil of Olay ( Equate) morning and evening on my face (in the early evening, about 6PM ) and never wash it off before bedtime.I have found I get a better seal with it than when my face is too dry.

I will have to see what is in that. I tried the real Oil of Olay once and it gave me a bad rash. But then I tried one of their other products (can't remember the name but would recognize it by sight) and it didn't bother me. It was very expensive though so that's why I never bought it again. I've been using Aroma Crystal Ohm.

What will provide instant relief and a long-term solution is the following:

If you take showers get some baby oil and squirt some out on your skin in various locations... then let the sprinkle from the shower head spread it around. Only do this after you have soaped up and rinsed. When you think the baby oil has sufficient coverage turn of the shower and gently towel yourself off... you will feel instant relief and feel great the rest of the day.

If you take baths put some baby oil in the water.

I used to have a very dry skin. A dermatologist recommended a cream called " CeraVe", I have been using it for a month. it works really good, no more dry or itchy skin. I apply the cream in the morning after shower. You can buy this cream at Walgreen, for $ 14.99 for a 16 OZ jar.

#1 DRINK MORE WATER. Sounds like a no-brainer, but it will help hydrate you from the INSIDE.

#2 (and I don't sell these things so bear with me...)
Get a water softener. That one device has done more to alleviate dry skin in my family than all the creams, lotions or potions in the world.

Use a pre-shower treatment. Baby oil is ok but it's oily (hence the name). You want to put something on your skin that will soak into the surface BEFORE you get into the shower. Why? Because if your skin is dry and you get into the shower it will absorb WATER. The problem is that the effect is very short-lived. The water evaporates quickly and you're left with dry, itchy skin again.

Putting baby oil on while in the shower seals the moisture in the skin... and it works.

That just makes my skin oily and the bath slippery. And I certainly wouldn't want it on my face. It clogs the pores.

I will look for it, but... Wouldn't that prevent the mask from giving me a good seal?

I drink plenty of water and our water is soft. So that's not the problem.

I thought you were supposed to put something on your skin after the shower to seal the water in?

We swear by Aveeno (oatmeal based) products. My daughter has dry and very sensitive skin - always did from the time she was born.
I also love the effect of tea tree oil but it does smell very very uumm "medicinal" so don't use it when planning to go out.

Aveeno just makes me itchier and I must be allergic or something to tea tree oil. Gives me a horrid rash!

Your responses to suggestions so far are pretty negative... so I guess you'll just have to live with dry skin.

Sorry, thats just the way I see this thread going.

No, it would not affect the seal on the mask because, I use it only once in the morning after my shower. Before going to bed, I wash my face. The cream is really good and has taken care of my dry skin problems with just one application in the morning!!! I also use a soap called "Vanicream". also recommended by a dermatologist which is available from Walgreen at $ 2.99. Hope this works for you.
