On Ambien Too Long??

Post by Sleepy Boy » Sun May 03, 2009 3:50 pm

I took the regular Ambien for a while, then it quit working. My Dr. switched me to Ambien CR, and for the last 2-3 weeks, it seems like it has quit working. Do you get immune to this stuff?? Thanks, Larry..

Everone is different, but I've been using regular Ambien for about 7 years with no increase on dosage, and it still works great for me.

Two potential drawbacks of any sleeping medications are dependence and tolerance. Tolerance is the gradual decrease in effectiveness over time. One potential solution is to ask your physician to consider prescribing two different "classes" of sleep aides; perhaps Ambien and some other medication such as a benzodiazepine (Valium-class) agent. Then alternate between them, not necessarily daily, but perhaps switch every 3 to 7 days. Giving your body a "rest" from each every few days, allowing each to be "washed out" of the system, can help to prevent either dependence or tolerance. Good luck! Velbor

To avoid the hangover effect I switch between Sonata, Melatonin and Advil PM. I don't take any one of them more than 2 consecutive nights. I only take them when I need something to help. I've been doing that for some time now and the effectiveness hasn't degraded.

Thanks for the replies. I took nothing last night. I had a hard time getting to sleep, but no worse than taking the Ambien. I tried the Advil PM, it did work for a bit. Seems like I get a tolerance for all medications, and have to change every now & then. Thanks, Larry...
