Heated tubes from Oz

Post by Margaret » Thu Aug 18, 2005 8:01 am

I started treatment three months ago with an unheated (passover) humidifier and had the unpleasant experience of condensation collecting in the mask. We are in the middle of winter but I don't like to overheat the bedroom. I thought this was going to be a continuing problem but I got some improvement by lowering the machine to a foot above the floor and then thought I'd try a heated tube (didn't even realise it was an Australian invention until I saw it mentioned on this forum). Since using it I no longer have the drowning experience and would recommend it to anyone with the same problem. It "piggy-backs" off the CPAP power supply.

I just ordered my second heated hose, for a different type of machine.

I couldn't imagine being without one of these hoses from sleepzone.com.au in winter.

Of course now you MUST get a HEATED humidifier to complete your setup for comfort........

I agree with you Snork1, I couldn't do without the hose. I feel really comfortable without the heated humidifier but thanks for the suggestion.

You may be able to offer some assistance to Judy who is concerned that her new hose is not working properly, and is hoping for advice before she finishes work today. I don't understand much about your power supply over there. Perhaps there is a problem with the adapter.

Snork & Margaret,

I just posted HELP for the heated hose this morning.

I got my heated hose two days ago and last night I went to Radio Shack and bought the adapter. When I got home and plugged it in, I did not feel any heat whatsoever.

How long does it take to heat up and can you feel the warmth through the cover on the hose?

Thanks,
Judy

Assuming you picked up the correct size adapter that has sufficient output and everything plugged together, there really isn't much that can go wrong.

The hose does NOT get red hot... and you can only feel the tiniest bit of warmth through the cover, and sometimes that is hard to feel, especially on a fairly warm night. It doesn't take much to prevent condensation. You can probably feel the difference if you try it unplugged with the air and mask on, and then plug it in, give it 15 minutes (just to be conservative) and try it again and the air should feel slightly warmer. This is a lot more noticeable in the dead of winter and its a treat to breath in warm air in a chilly room in winter.

And of course the final test is comparing rainout before and after plugging it in.

Sometimes it is hard to tell if its working by feeling the outside cover. I sometimes wish they had a tiny "idiot light" just to reassure me.

Snork,

Thanks for your help. I will try it again tonight and let you know.
I kept feeling it and then I kept looking into the hose thinking I would see a "red glow". I must have looked pretty stupid to my dog....naw, he thinks I am perfect.

The guy at Radio Shack gave me 2 little plug adapters to put on the transformer, a "M" and a "N". I checked with a post that RG posted to me and hers was an "M" so that is right. I tried both as they both seemed pretty close to me.

I too wish there was a sensor on the hose to reassure me too.

HI. I'll weigh in here.... there will be no red glow.... and, in fact, the outside of the hose is just barely discernably warm to the touch. I bet it's working just fine. Let us know !

Thanks for your help too.

I guess I thought it would be warm like a heating pad.
I will plug it in tonight and let y'all know on Monday as I don't have a computer at home yet (only work). Finally getting a computer in September so I can gab more.

Judy, there's no indicator that the heated hose is "on" after you plug it in. (Yes, the "M" adapter is what I use.)

As the others said, it just barely feels the slightest bit warm when you put your hand around it.

Even then, there will be places up and down the length of the hose where you won't feel any warmth at all. You might feel a bit of warmth with your hand at one spot, and no warmth at another spot.

If you have a hot hand, you might not notice any at all!

Hi RG,

Yes, I finally found that other post where you told me "M" and so I will try it again tonight. I was amazed that I felt nothing. Guess I have HOT little hands or something.

Thanks for your help. I'll let you know how it goes.

Hi Judy

Hope you slept well with your new hose. I feel a bit silly now saying that the hose would feel warm. I was forgetting that you're not in winter as we are. I barely heat the bedroom so of course the hose feels warm. I will take the advice of others and switch it off during the day (especially with all these imaginary bugs running wild).

Thanks to everyone, I finally got to appreciate the Aussie Heated Hose. I plugged it in and I hardly could feel the warmth with my hand but when I put it on to go to sleep, it was there. The nice consistent warmth of air ALL NIGHT LONG without "rainout" at all.

I love it and its well worth the money to me.

Thanks again,

Judy
