Saw Dr. -- New script -- question

Saw GP dr. today. She didn't even ask any questions about the cpap. Just said she was glad I'm using it and that she would write the rx for anything I wanted. Great. I've got the Rx. But...it really shows me I'm on my own here.

So this is what Rx says:

Auto CPAP - ResMed S8 Auto Set II
Heated Humidifier (HumidAire 3i or 4i)
Full Face Mask

I didn't think about it until after I had left the dr.'s office, but she didn't put a pressure reading in my Rx. Is that going to be a problem? I'm now on straight CPAP at 5cm.

Another question is, can I just walk into my DME with this new Rx and they'll fill it? Before it was the sleep center who called it into DME, but I don't think they are involved anymore in my case. I have already called my insurance and they said I could change out the machine as long as I have a script. Which now I do.

Not having the pressure on the script could definitely be a problem. Once you get the script right you should be able to send it to a DME yourself. It's just like a prescription for medicine where you can bring it to any Walgreens or CVS, except you'll bring it to a DME.

You have to take it in yes. You might face some hassles and delays. You really need to call the DME and ask how they handle it and if they don't give you answers you like, start shopping for another DME before the end of the current month's rental. You need to check the contract you signed with the DME too.

All of this will vary based on DME and insurance contracts they have. There is no universal answer.

There are people who have gotten APAP scripts and not gotten their insurance or DME to change the machine. There are others that had few problems changing machines.

Just take the script in to your local DME you've been doing business with. They may insist on a scripted pressure range. If so they can call the doctor and get it. Or if you want you can call the doctor's office and point out that the local DME insists on a pressure range and ask if you could pick up a new script w/the pressures on it from her/hes receptionist. No need for another appointment. Be prepared the local DME will just set it at 4-20 or 5-20 or if they are the difficult, spiteful type then you'll have to go the reminding the doctor you need the pressure settings on the script too. I'd try w/o tho just going w/the script you've got. Good luck.

Or .... I didn't say this .... if you have the same color pen you could just add 5-10 (or whatever). Number dash number shouldn't be difficult to do w/o its looking suspicious. I know one time my family doctor scripted a regular blood draw for a med I'm on. He was somewhat concerned about a minor temp and SAID he was going to order a CRP and Sed rate as well. Except when I got home he'd forgotten to put the CRP & Sed rate on. It was one of those pre-printed script pads w/the CPT-codes and test name w/a box in front of each item. When I called him HE told me to just black in the CRP and Sed rate boxes. So I did. Of course, I felt like a criminal when I handed the script to the lab staff and I'm sure my pulse and BP were sky high but it all went w/o a hitch. And it was a good thing, despite a minor temp both CRP and Sed rate were extremely elevated.
