I'm in NSW - my heart goes out to all Victorians.

We had severe bushfires in NSW in '94, but I believe nothing like Victoria's this year. They are saying it is Australia's worst natural disaster, although the talk of arsonists starting so many of these fires may have them amending that comment - ?

They all ought to be strung up - bring back the posses & hanging tree!

it seems that the worst of the fires are gone at least for now but the weather is heating up again so the risk is still there! the sheer scale of the destruction is hard to fathom! One town called Marysville had a population of around 500 and they think that the death toll may reach 100, thats 20% of the population. Whole familes are unaccounted for at present and that fire is thought to have been deliberately lit! One expert estimated that the power of the fires was equivalent to 500 of the A bombs that were dropped on hiroshima! Some of the deaths were thought not to be from smoke or the flames but sue to the intense fires using up all the available oxygen =it created dreadful fire storms

They estimate that somewhere around 1million animals may have perished and there are many severly burnt creatures that volunteers are trying to find at the moment. The areas that have been affected form the water catchment for melbourne- water levels were already low because of the extended driught but now they are worried that when it rains all the ash and chemical fire retardents are going to be washed into the water catchements- it may have serious implications for melbournes water supplies for up to 50years!

The stories that are coming out are remarkable both in terms of the strength of the human spirit in such terrible times and also how low some people can be. there are stories such as the man who found a severely burnt neighbour and got him into his backyard pool and held him afloat for 6 hours as the fires raged until help could arrive. that same man has now taken in at least 5 families and has gone around the area giving basic supplies and power generators for people in the area. There was the man who had 20 women and children, he broke into a pub and had them hide in the walk in fridge while he stood on the roof with a hose and buckets of water while they were surrounded by flames- all this when he had a serious injury himself-they all survived in an area where there were many deaths. But sadly the stories are also coming in about looters who are stealing the few things that some people have left.

it is gratifying to see that even though these are tough times because of the recession, people are being so generous, with over $100 million being donated so far as well as truck loads of food and goods

please keep the bush fire victims in your thoughts, there are still many people missing and whole communities have been wiped of the face of the earth. AUssies are survivors, they will bounce back but the sheer scale means that it is going to take a long time
