vitamin b12 diffency and Central apnea

Post by wlo2008 » Sun Aug 31, 2008 2:07 pm

I have been trying to do some reasearch. And I was wondering if vitamin b12 diffency is conected with Central Apnea at all. My Neuro doc did a bunch of blood tests and I have vitamin b12 diffency. So I am wondering if that is conected and might be the reasons why my centrals are getting worse. I am on shots and a suplment at the moment to help it out.

that is one of the ingredients I look for in a multi-vitamin. But yes not enough B12 can impact your CNS. If you also take B6 and Folic Acid (Folate) with it, it can lower your homocysteine level which supposedly good for cardiovascular health.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vitamin_B12_deficiency
Early and even fairly pronounced deficiency does not always cause distinct or specific symptoms. Common early symptoms are tiredness or a decreased mental work capacity, decreased concentration and decreased memory, irritability and depression.
Sleep disturbances may occur, because B12 may be involved in the regulation of the sleep wake cycle by the pineal gland (through melatonin)[1].
Neurological signs of B12 deficiency, which can occur without anemia, include sensory disturbances due to damage to peripheral nerves caused by demyelination and irreversible nerve cell death. Symptoms include numbness, tingling of the extremities, disturbed coordination and, if not treated in time, an ataxic gait, a syndrome known as subacute combined degeneration of spinal cord.
B12 deficiency can also cause symptoms of mania and psychosis.[2][3]
Recent studies have devalued a possible connection between B12 deficiency and Alzheimer's dementia, and such a correlation is unlikely as of June 2007.[4]
Studies showing a relationship between clinical depression levels and deficient B12 blood levels in elderly people are documented in the clinical literature.[5] and 2002 [6]
Bipolar disorder appears to genetically co-segregate with the hereditary B12-deficiency disorder pernicious anemia [7][8].
You should be able to find a lot of info on B12 deficiency and problems associated with it. Are you a vegetarian?

Note: Use of that Swift mask will INCREASE the number of centrals seen, reason Resmed doesn't recommend it with its machines for treating that disorder. If you use a mask that retains more C02 you will have fewer CA's.

No I'm not a vegitarian. And I do take my suplements as well with all the B vitamins. I also drink my milk, eat fish, and have an egg in the morning. So the Neuro doc is not sure why my B12 is being depleted. So for the mean time he is giving me injections of the B12. But he never said anything about it being conected to my Centrals at all. I forgot to ask him. But know I am going to see if this could be the case. Maybe over time it will get better.

Also so you are saying that the swift nasal pillows should not be used with Respironics Bipap Auto SV unit?

my guess is you have pernicious anemia, it is not that you are depleting it, you are probably not absorbing it to begin with. I would consult with a hematologist.

What he said. See a doctor, wlo2008.

I am not anemic at all. My iron level infact is very high. I am under several doctors care. But my Neuro doc is thinking that I need to see a GI, that I might have a GI issue not causing me to absorb the B12 as well. But it seems to take forever to get refferals rolling and the insurance approving everything.

your iron level has nothing to do with it, pernicious anemia is the inability to absorb B12. Your Neuro wants to send you to a GI specialist to examine your lower intestine because that is where B12 is normally absorbed, for you it is not working.

there are many types of anemia. Again you may be deficient in B12, it is more likely you don't absorb it as opposed to depleting it.

Sounds like you're on the right track. Don't let the system roll over you. Take care of yourself.

I give my wife B-12 injections - have for several years. It was decided a long time ago that she "lacks the intrinsic factor" that results in B-12 in the body. No amount of ingested B-12 pills will help, although the under the tongue pills might. Shots are easy and you can't OD on B-12, and conversely a lot of bad things can happen when your B-12 is really low.

Because of her experience, I humor her by taking an under the tongue pill daily. We get them at Trader Joe's and are by Trader Darwin's. It's B-12 / Folic Acid / B-6 and come 100 to a little bottle that costs about $6. They say the pills you put under your tongue are absorbed into the blood directly - but what do I know.

I believe it, unfortunately as your wife found out, reserve B12 is stored in the liver, once it is gone it is gone, injections or subliminal is the only way to get the amount you need.

So sense my reserves are depleted is it safe to say that I will most likely be on the injections for the rest of my life? I will go to trader joes and check out the B12 pill that your wife takes.

Don't know Windy, it depends on the cause, but if it's the intrinsic factor, yes. But don't let that get you down. My wife had so much more energy at first she would look forward to the shots. They started her with 1 every 3 weeks, but she was out of energy half way through so it became weekly. After the first few it has been so routine there's no wimpers, just a small sigh. You really do want home shots though to avoid the wait and germs floating around the doc's office.

CAN you OD on B-12? I bought some before this thread started, because I heard it sorta "peps" you up. I took one kinda late on Saturday, and then I couldn't sleep. Learned MY lesson.

But if I take it in the AM (it's a timed release version), I am okay.

So... without a doctor's order telling me "you are low on B-12" is this dangerous at all?

Thanks much!
B.

Short answer is no. This is one of those that pee out the excess,
