Ultra Mirage Question

Post by SleepyRose » Fri Jan 30, 2009 7:57 am

Last night I noticed air coming out of the fitting that attaches to the mask, (that the hose attaches to) its the part that twirls around, it's right next to the mask itself, just forward of the clips.. It's fairly open there. doesnt really look like a leak per se, just some openings. Thing is, Ive never noticed air there before though.

I had a bad leak rate last night (49) 38 being my norm and my stats said I had 5 min large leak, 1.48% of night, AHI was good at 1.3 but it seems if the thing was leaking that bad all night the leak would be worse.
Anyways, thats my story.
Thanks everyone.

If you go to this link, could you please try to pinpoint where (which part number) you think it's leaking?

Have you ever taken the mask "apart"? I've always advised users not to disassemble that mask. I've read too many posts about those who did and couldn't get them back together again without leaking.

"Valve frame", no number on it though. The leaky part is just ahead of it.(towards the mask)

I never took it apart intentionally but one night it came apart. I got my book out and followed the diagrams and put it back together.

Did you get it from a local supplier? If so, you could take it in and have them check it out.
I don't have one of mine handy at the moment to look it over and see if or how that area is attached or may possibly leak, but I will when I get home. That's also part of the anti-asphyxiation mechanism......which allows you to breathe outside air if the machine stops. (but don't ask me how it works)

Thanks Den, I checked the same area on my Hybrid and that also has a "hole" of sorts. It just seems funny I just noticed it.
Bad night I guess.(throw the mask at the dog night)

My supplier is about 1/2 hr away but the roads are too bad to bother with it.

I use the same mask and it sounds like you're talking about the valve... the 90deg thing that the hose connects to. It's made up of 6 parts. One of these is the anti-asphyxiation membrane. I had one that got damaged somehow and I don't know if it was leaking, but there sure was a rush of air. I replaced it and the noise subsided to normal levels. It's a cheap part and easy to replace (oh... I know; easy when you know how ).

This site http://www.resmed.com/en-us/products/ma ... cc-usa.pdf has the exploded diagram of the mask

Hope this is helpful

There's a membrane? What's that look like?

I just bought one via auction, it came with no manuals or anything....so I'm not sure how to put it all together and wear it yet.

Dreamer - It's a very thin silicone (I think) cylinder open on one side and has a hole in the other. It's part #16617. Check out the link to ResMed's website I posted before.

Oops... I forgot. You can download a .pdf manual from the ResMed site too.

Thanks Nanuke, I located the membrane, its VERY delicate. Im not having problems with noise really, I just never noticed the air coming out of there before. Does the air come out of yours in that spot?

Hmmm, I'll have to remember to take a closer look at the mask....The only silicon part I remember examining last night were the forehead piece and the face seal (which had fingerprints on it, so I meant to make a note to at least use a mask wipe on it). Though I didn't look at the elbow part in too much detail...so it could just be that I missed it.

SleepyRose - Just went to my bedroom and tested it. No air around the valve, but there is that little silicone thing with the holes in it that is near the apex of the mask. BTW, I've learned NOT to remove that part when I dissasemble the mask for an occasional thorough cleaning; it's a real SOB to get it back on. Anyway, air comes out of there, but I think that's by design.

My noise happened a few years ago, so I don't remember, but if air is making noise, it must be moving through something.
Like I said, changing the membrane cured the problem.

Also, I'm using a mask that I was allowed to keep when I had a sleep study 9 days ago... so it's pretty new.

You have to remove the whole valve/elbow assembly, starting at the retaining clip inside the mask. Then you press on two clips to remove the elbow and there it is. If you remove it, be careful... it's delicate.

ResMed recommends that you don't do this too often, as the 2 clips that hold the valve together wear and are liable to break.

I broke one on one of my older masks because I had an itch on my nose and momentarily pulled the mask away by the elbow. I've learned to do this by pushing the main part of the mask.

Alright, I downloaded the manual...looked the mask over in more detail, and now see where it is.

I also took the mask apart to get a closer look....I don't think I want to be doing that very often....
