Is nosebreathing better even with FF mask?

Post by Bonnie corgi lover » Mon Jan 26, 2009 8:36 am

Is there any advantage to breathing through only your nose if you are using a full face mask? I can keep my mouth closed most nights, but it's an effort. I have a papcap, but it interferes with my mask, so that doesnt' help. Should I even bother to try to keep my mouth closed?

I'm sure this has been discussed, but couldn't figure out the right search to narrow down the results.

When I switched from a nasal mask to a FF mask, my AHIs went down but my vibratory snores went up - my wife says she can hear me 'almost snore' sometimes. I can see this on the data download, but it's not associated with either leaks or apnea events. I assume I am mouth breathing, but since it's all pressurized, I am not having 'leaks'

Nasal breathing is always preferred to mouth breathing. There's more of a chance for the base of the tongue to fall back into the airway when mouth breathing. Sometimes, the trick for some of us is keeping our nasal passages open......nasal rinses/cleansing help a bunch.
I know in my own case, using a full face mask and learning to keep my nasal passages open has helped me tremendously. I'm able to keep my tongue to the roof of my mouth and breathe well through my nose all night long.
