How to raise leak rates with Opus??

Post by grumpygirl » Wed Jan 21, 2009 11:19 am

Hello All-
Yes I am trying to raise my leak rate while using the Opus. I have found that my rates are very low and are I think contributing to my feeling of fatique and grogginess. My leak rates usually fall in the range or .02-.08 and if I am lucky .16. My APAP pressure range is 9.2-13.8 and my AI is very low most days-in the 0.1 to 0.0 range. I tape my mouth and also tie (with dental floss) the nasal pillows a little closer together in order to prevent HUGE leaks. If I don't tie them together they leak so loudly that I cannot get to sleep. I use a medium size nasal pillow . On days when I manage(somehow) to get a fairly "normal" leak rate of .24 I feel much better. Just wondering if anyone who uses the Opus has any sugggestions as to how I might up the leak rate in order to feel better. I am in the process of trying to find a FFM that I can tolerate but no luck yet. Any suggestions?? Grumpygirl

Not sure about your question. Maybe others can address. I may be out in left field somewhere.
But a low leak rate is good.

It may be that the air is not venting fast enough so you rebreathe the CO2. Then when the mask leaks it is actually venting faster so you feel better. First make sure the vent holes are not being blocked. If the vent holes are fine then you can get your mask to vent faster, thus the air is fresher, by raising the pressure. Your machine won't show a bigger leak rate though because it takes the higher air pressure and thus higher vent rate into account when it calculates the leak rate.

Is the 9.2-13.8 what your min and max is set at? My machine can't be set for 10ths of a cm so that seems weird to me. But I'm not familiar with the Resmed machines. If not then what is your min and max pressure settings? You might try raising the min pressure some. Or you could try a different mask that has a higher vent rate although it looks like the Opus has a fairly high vent rate to begin with, at least compared to my Activa.
