Using a CPAP mask with an Altitude Generator?

Post by Learn » Thu Jan 01, 2009 12:25 am

I am an endurance athlete who sleeps in a tent attached to a generator that simulates altitude of between 10,000 and 15,000 feet. This is helpful for naturally stimulating my hemocrit levels in a legal and safe way, better preparing me for races I do in Colorado, and also has some potential anti-aging benefits.

The machine and tent come from a company named Colorado Altitude Training.

In addition to the tent, they provide a mask that covers the mouth and nose and is meant to be used while training.

I want to stop sleeping in the tent, and the mask they sent is very uncomfortable to sleep in, so I've started looking for other options.

Would it be possible to use a CPAP sleeping mask and attach it to the generator, or to a bag valve and then to the generator?

Thanks

What sort of hose connector does your mask use?

CAT now sells a sleeping mask kit to go with your altitude generator.

Learn,

1.)We wear masks to prevent hypoxia and you guys wear masks to induce hypoxia? One of us is crazy as hell.

2.)Why don't you look up Durable Medical Equipment Suppliers (DMEs) in you local Yellow Pages and arrange to visit one and examine masks and tubing. I would not let them know you want to use it for anything besides cpap. If you want to buy one you can usually order it at lower prices (and better customer service) from https://www.cpap.com/.

Just be aware that for cpap users finding a suitable/comfortable mask is the biggest challenge. Typically we try several masks before finding one that is tolerable.

3)On another subject, we had a discussion here sorta like this. "Most of us went many years or even decades with sleep apnea before we were diagnosed and started treatment. We noticed something after we had a successful treatment going for some time. That something is skipping one night of cpap will make us feel much worse than we felt before we were diagnosed and treated." We wondered why we would now feel worse when skipping one night. It sounds like before we were treated our hemocrit levels may have been abnormally high and after some time of good cpap therapy our hemocrit levels return to normal. With normal hemocrit levels one night without cpap is more damaging that nights with high hemocrit levels. Think so?

Thanks for the info.

I already did ask them and they blew my email off after I pointed out the 'sleep mask' image they sent me looked just like the exercise mask I got initially. Their solution also looks stupid expensive.

That seems logical.

Thanks for the advice.

I think what I am really getting at is if I plugged a mask directly into the generator, the amount of air pressure would blow my eyes out of my skill. So I need a black rubber bag that keeps the pressure down.

I really want a simple nasal breather. I can wear that all the time.
