Brand New CPAP user

Post by Shar » Tue Dec 30, 2008 10:46 pm

New Year's Eve night spent in the sleep lab having a CPAP titration...although not the place where most folks would choose to bring in 2009, I'm looking forward to it. Having been diagnosed 2 weeks ago with "severe obstructive sleep apnea" and being soooooo tired for so long, I am in great hopes of finally getting some restful sleep. I know that it will take a while to adjust to the machine but am hoping I will soon feel better. My energy levels have been very low and I'm curious to know from others if I will indeed see improvement there as my doctor has stated . I just found this support group and joined tonite. My best to all of you.

Welcome, and yes you should see very noticable improvement in the way you feel.....it usually doesn't happen overnight.....you likely will gradually begin to notice signs.....most important of all, stick around here and learn everything you can to make your therapy work that much better and faster......good luck....you will be glad you signed up....

Welcome, and yes you should see very noticable improvement in the way you feel.....it did not happen overnight for me but i did gradually feel better and better each time I was able to keep my mask on. Now I can sleep 8 to 9 hours with my mask on --so at first you won't be able to do that many hours, but keep at it --you will feel the difference,

Carrie.

I'll add my WELCOME too!! Good luck to you on your new journey I've only been on CPAP now for a month, but I already have noticed a HUGE difference in how I feel during the day!

Thank you, all, for your support and encouragement. I had the CPAP titration done and now am waiting for the prescription to arrive via the physician and then have to meet with a home care services person, etc . The tech at the hospital said it could take a few weeks. Gheesh! I'm anxious to get going with the CPAP treatment. This seems like such an inefficient system. Is this typical of everyone's experience?
Thanks in advance for any light on the subject.

Hi Shar----you are going through the very same thing that most of us had to face. They tell you that you stop breathing in your sleep but yet--- let you hanging for a few weeks while they get their ducks in a row to get you the equipment that you need!!!! Very inefficient system of things but it is all we have and we have to work with it or around it I should say--LOL!!! Good thing you came to this website BEFORE you are getting your equipment so you will know what you want ahead of time. If I were you --try the new Swift LT mask that I am using. I have already tried about 6 or 7 masks before finding this one. It is comfortable, you can still watch TV or read with it on and it does not make you feel like Darth Vader like some of the other bulky face masks. It is a nasal mask so hopefully you do not need a full face mask as this one might not work for you but I really do love it. I am a side sleeper and it stays on even when I roll from side to side --good luck!! Let us know how it goes for you,
Carrie

That's exactly what I went through. It's very frustrating because you're anxious to feel better, but you have to wait. I understand completely. Hang in there!

Regrettably, yes, it is. But this Forum is a gold mine of information. The "Our Wisdom" (click on the yellow light bulb up above) has many good threads.

If you have any questions, just ask! I realized it's only been three months since I first logged in her, and I've learned an amazing amount. My mask fits. My leak rate line is almost completely flat. The leak rate is within range. AND I'm feeling way better!

What more can you ask?
