Compare and Contrast Masks

Post by kaydacat » Mon Dec 29, 2008 9:39 am

I am having a hard time finding any information that directly compares and contrasts different nasal masks. Does anyone have a link or any info? I'm fairly new, and am having a hard time finding a comfortable mask. From what I've read, I guess it's just going to be trial and error, but that gets very expensive.

Try the website https://www.cpap.com. People report user reviews of items purchased from this website.

Weeelllllll....not necessarily. I agree the first visit should be at their place with adequate training on the machine. However, as my RT said, sitting in their office does not a good mask test make. She sent me home with what appeared to be a good fitting mask, however when I slept....She has already delivered a different mask for me to try, and I am getting yet another this week. She said I have 30 days to make up my mind, and they will deliver the test drive masks to me, at MY place.

my DME has a recliner,so after you get the mask fitted, he sits you down and refits it. tests it on both max and min pressure.

How do you like the Ultra Mirage II mask? I tried one, but I think it's the wrong size (I got a shallow based on measurements, but I think I need a "standard"). I bought it from cpap.com and bought the 30 day insurance, so I am going to return it for the standard size.

Kay,

Masks are tough, one of the hardest things to get right. Hopefully you have a cooperative DME who will let you try a variety on, under pressure, with a cot or couch you can lay down on and move around to get an idea if the mask is one that might work for you. If they are REALLY nice they will have a liberal return policy, because how can you really figure out if a mask will work for you unless you use it for a couple of nights, right? In the time I have been on this site I think I have seen almost every mask out there both praised mightily and cursed hotly by someone. Everyone's face is different, so you have to keep looking until you can find something that works for you. Posting here is a great way to get input on different masks, and going into chat and asking around can give you some good feedback too. Phoebe is right about cpap.com., its a great resource to browse different types of masks and read reviews about them. If you find a mask you are interested in, you can also check cpapauction.com to see if it in for sale there, ususlly at substantial savings.

I use the Ultra Mirage II myself, and I like it okay. I like the quick release for getting up at night, but on the Ultra mirage I had before this one it got wore out and started leaking a bit after a few months. This one has been going strong with no problems for many months. I do use tape at night, and plan to get a UMFF sometime soon and give it another try. I have a Swift II I have never really been able to get to work for me, but again others have reported success with it. I used the ComfortGel for a couple of weeks, and it was comperable to the Ultra mirage but didn't have the quick release, so I switched back to the UM. Hope this helps, and that you find a good mask soon that works for you!
