wondering if second sleep study may be (more) informative

Post by liv2kite » Sun Nov 23, 2008 2:02 pm

I wonder if another sleep study would allow better titration of my CPAP pressure to alleviate my symptoms or can I do this myself if I have Encore Pro/Smartcard and a pulse Oximeter (then all I am missing is the EEG). I have been on CPAP or the snoozer (as my wife calls it) for about 2 years. My first and only sleep study was weird: you know weird bed, weird room, weird air blowing and weird mask. I remember being tired beyond belief after that night and feeling as though I did not sleep at all (I guess I did according to the tech - but I don't know how much). Now that I have masks that work and am accustomed to CPAP, sleep study might go smoother and allow collection of more "cleaner" data.

Hi, have you been following your progress with Encore on a regular basis, and understand the readouts? Are you using 'just' Cpap vs Apap, and at what setting or settings if on Apap? Your readouts should tell you the averages, but if you're new to it, come back and say so, and we will help you. You shouldn't need another PSG if you are following your numbers properly.

Well, my second sleep study was probably worse than the first one. The first one was just over 5 years ago and the second was this past April.

There I was with my favourite mask, my own bed pillow and all. The room, bed and surroundings were still strange and terrible. In addition, the room was freezing. I slept very little (less than I did at my first sleep study). Getting an good titration under those circumstances is often very difficult.

Since you have an auto machine, software, etc and even a pulse oximeter, you should do better at home doing a mini study of your own over a short period of time. You can get an eeg and an ecg separately if you want to cover all the bases.

If you have your data, you can see what has been going on. Do you know your pressure setting or are you using the machine in auto and have a range of pressure? Does your pulse oximeter have software so that you can see what happens during the night?

If you can post a couple of typical "Daily Details" pages on the forum or give a few numbers like pressure setting(s), AHI, leak rate, your mask, 90% pressure, people here can give you some suggestions as to setting(s) that would make for better therapy. How are you feeling (rested, headaches, other symptoms)? Have things become worse over the 2 years? Were things good at first? What's changed if anything?
