Auction Question

Post by DoriC » Sun Nov 16, 2008 11:42 am

Do I need a Paypal account to bid on cpap auction or will they take a credit card? Is it safer to open a Paypal account than use credit card? I never bid an auction before. Thanks,

Click on the item on CPAPAuction that you are interested in and it will pull up the page for that item. Scroll down and on the right side is will list the payment options accepted by the seller. Paypal is, I think, by far the fastest and the safest. A Paypal account is not hard to set up but needs to be set up in advance to winning at auction. Google Paypal, go there and set up your account. Just be careful -- auctions are addictive.

Paypal is widely accepted at auction sites and gives you the ability to dispute. Just be sure your computer isn't loaded with spyware when sending all your personal info.

What paypal brings to the table that other payment methods don't, is a mechanism where you can request paypal to chase a seller if there are any problems.
I have used it about 4 times over the years and everytime it produced very quick results in regard to the sales in question. In one instance I was owed $US400 for an item I paid for but the seller was ultimately unable to supply - after weeks of not getting my money back I went to paypal who 1st advised me I was a long period outside their guidelines but they would approach the seller anyway (who was in JapaN) & within 4 days I had the money back.

That answers my question, I will set up a Paypal account, I was a little hesitant to use a credit card anyway.

I have a PayPal account and use it if they accept it.

Never give them a credit card number via email. Could be hacked. I wouldn't give my credit card number over the phone for an item on an auction site either.

Some will accept personal checks and some will accept Postal Money orders. You could still loose your money with these 2 methods but they are pretty safe, especially if the feedback for a seller is good. I ALWAYS read feedback.

Dori,
You can use a credit card through PayPal. You don't have to have them take it out of your bank account. I have a Costco/American Express card which gives me cash back so I always use it through PayPal.

You can link your credit card to Paypal, I think Johnny said that is the safest way. I think I did this part over the phone. You might consider opening a new bank acct. just for the Paypal too. Certainly you don't want to link it to an acct with your life savings.

You should also be aware that like Ebay, Paypal is plagued by fraud emails from people trying to get your acct info or password. Just do NOT respond to these phishing attempts.

I have also used Money Orders before but keep in mind if you do, it is you that will have to chase the seller in any dispute. While sellers are extremely responsive to Paypal.

It seems more & more places accept Paypal today also.

In Summary you will need to link your Paypal acct to -
1. an email addy - choose an acct you will use often (daily). I think some sellers get in trouble bc they don't see the emails sent to them.
2. mailing addy
3. phone
4. credit card
5. bank acct.

I chose not to provide my SSAN. Gumby's rule is simple - unless you are paying my retirement - you don't need it.

Good Luck,
GumbyCT
