Not enough Humidity?

Post by jd1793 » Fri Nov 07, 2008 9:12 am

Maybe this is a newbie question; i seem to have the opposite problem of what i am seeing as frequent problems when i searched "humidity". My machine seems to run out of humidity long before the end of my normal 6 hour night. I always wake up in the morning with an incredibly dry mouth to the point of it being uncomfortable. I am using a new Devilbiss unit set on 13 and tried humidity settings between 0 and 12 always with the same result and no water left in the unit at the end of the first night. Did not have this problem with my old Devilbiss and the reservoir lasted for a week.

Boy, that just doesn't sound right. If I were in your shoes, I think I'd contact whoever I got it from. I don't know that machine, but especially since you had one before and the H20 lasted, that really makes it sound like there's something wrong mechanically. Good luck!

There's your two clues right there.......you're leaking LOTS of humidity out your mouth at night. You need to seal your mouth or get a full face mask. Too much humidity can close up your nasal passages and cause you to mouth-breathe and mouth-leak.

jd1793, LISTEN TO THE WULFMAN. I hadn't thought about that, and his is the FAR better advice. (Sorry about that. )

Thanks for the advice folks. I do have what I think is a full face mask, however, I know that I am having a hard time breathing through it holding my mouth shut and I bet I am opening my mouth during sleep. When I first lay down, I have a problem inhaling and exhaling comfortably through the mask and so I am exhaling through my mouth every few breaths or so; sort of like catching my breath until I fall to sleep.

So, the real problem if I understood you correctly is not too little humidity but maybe too much? Any suggestions to fix my problem? My mask is a brand new one, but, the air holes seem much smaller than my old one. The mask covers my nose completely, has little suction things that adjust on my forehead with a screw device and straps that are pretty easy to adjust. I also have nasal pillow but It is painful to use with my nostrils being really sore in the morning and no way to keep the nasal pillow stable during the night. I wanted that to work because I have a dental implant in one of my front teeth and too much pressure on my upper lip can also be uncomfortable. Someone suggested a "snuggle" device for the tube? Any thoughts on that as a possible solution to my dry mouth? Would it help with my running out of distilled water every night before the end of the evening?

I would suggest turning your humidity WAAAAAY down.....or OFF. Also, try doing a nasal rinse or whatever works to get your nasal passages as clear as possible before bedtime.
I actually use my humidifier with NO heat (called "pass-over") and in fact use cold water in it as it opens up my nasal passages......much like being outside on a cool/cold night.

Try to figure out which specific mask you actually have. A full face mask would actually cover both the nose and mouth.
