question about my husband and his machine

Post by ChicagoWife » Fri Nov 07, 2008 9:54 pm

My husband is sleeping as I type this...wearing his nose mask. He was put on this in August but has had some trouble adjusting and only wears it a couple of hours every night. I have been watching him tonight and have some questions. It seems like he stops breathing every few breaths for several seconds and then kind of jerks and takes a real deep breath and repeats. I'm not sure if this is normal or maybe the pressure is wrong on his machine. Can anyone explain this to me or let meknow if you've seen it before? Thanks!

I'm afraid that's called Sleep Apnea, sounds like his treatment isn't working well. You need to join, fill in his profile, (IN Text, not ICON), let us know how his machine is set. (Pressure). He needs to use it every time he sleeps. When you use a nasal mask, you can breath out through your mouth, if you do it's the same as not putting the machine on. To hold the airway open you have to trap the pressure inside your airway. A Full Face mask by-passes that problem. Jim

I would suspect that the pressure isn't correct or he's breathing through his mouth. But that's just a guess on my part based on the information you've provided.....

Highly recommend watching the video link that Ozij provided -- excellent information!!!!

cheers

if you join the forum and fill in your profile, one thing we can help with is giving you suggestions on how he might adjust to the treatment better. Maybe he just hates the mask, maybe it's too small or hurting his face, maybe there is water trapped in the hose, maybe he is leaking air out of his mouth, ..... there may be many reasons for someone to NOT use the machine. BUT they CAN be overcome.

So join us and let us know what setup he's using
