Help with new mask

Post by izzyb » Wed Oct 08, 2008 12:00 pm

Okay, after trying the Ultra Mirage FF Mask for a few weeks and having some leakage issues and feeling that the small was too long for my face, I got the Mirage Quattro FF Mask yesterday in an x-small. I feel the length of it is better and it is quieter (even though that was never an issue for me, just an extra), but I hardly slept all night. It leaked even worse than the Ultra Mirage - all around the mouth area. I tried it loose and tight and everything in between. I loved the dial at the top but even with it dialed all the way in, I still needed it closer in. I had to have the straps really tight to keep the leakage at a minimum. Help! I can't trade this one in since it is an exchange. Is this such a problem because I am on BiPap or have such a high pressure? I was thinking maybe a full face mask isn't the way to go because of these reasons. I guess I will go back to my old Comfort Gel Mask. I just thought since I wasn't seeing great results after nearly two years that maybe a full face mask would help. Any thoughts?

I usually adjust my Quattro the following way:

-with the lower edge of the mask sitting near the edge of my lower chin.
-with the upper straps fairly loose (basically lightly going around my head).
-using the forehead adjustment to adjust the upper part and lower straps to adjust the lower part.
-set the upper forehead adjustment just so there are no leaks around the eyes... usually around 15 setting for me.
-when going to bed I will lay down and lift the mask off my face, allow my face to settle in that resting position then place the mask back down.

The marks I do get on my face usually go away fairly quickly in the morning. No sore spots remain nor do I find the mask uncomfortable during the night. In fact, there are some nights I wake up and don't even realize I have the mask on until I twitch my face.

Although I have my fit pretty well dialed in... I am still experimenting with it. Try to adjust it with the highest pressure then you should be good for anything lower.

I also wash my face and mask cushion each day.

Give it a whirl, although you may find this mask is not for you... unfortunately there is no one size fits all for everyone.

I put it on and adjusted it like the video showed which is basically what you said. I can't dial the top in anymore. I feel like the problem may be my chubby cheeks. I think that maybe they are why it doesn't seal well around my mouth. Maybe the longer Ultra Mirage worked better on my face because the Quattro seems to sit on my checks more and causes the bottom of the mask to not seat well. The weird thing about the leakage is that I don't understand how air can come out when the mask is pressed so tight against my face. Everybody says not to have it too tight, but when I loosen it it just leaks more.
