I have been on CPAP for quite some time and I would like a new machine. I have the prescription for the CPAP, but I'd like an APAP. Do I need to get and new and different prescription to buy an auto-pap device or will my cpap script allow me to buy one too?

My sleep doc prescribed a CPAP, but said it was ok for me to buy an APAP. She just felt I didn't need to put out the extra cash unless I wanted to. In the end she was right. I get my best results with my apap set at the fixed pressure she prescribed.
When buying my APAP noone questioned the fact that the prescription was for a cpap.

You need a specific prescription for an APAP. My sleep nurse practicener refused to give me one because according to him, a CPAP is all I needed. I still think that I should get an APAP because I see some benefits that a plain CPAP doesn't have. I will talk again with my sleep nurse practicener about it after one month on my CPAP.

I think this is true if you have DME coverage so that your insurance is paying for it. But you can take your cpap prescription anywhere and pay for your equipment out of your own pocket and noone will question which type you buy.

Well, if you are concerned, take a little white out and make a new "suggestion" on your prescription. Then xerox it and when you do an online purchase, you just scan it and off it goes. Online, noone really cares, because an AUTO can also be used as a straight CPAP. If you are going through a DME, they will follow the prescription to the word. If it is really old, they will check to see if there is an equipment update....if they are a good DME.....no need to worry! Basically, anyone will be more than happy to take your money!!!!
