Insomnia Appointment: What ?'s Should I ask???

Post by Swordz » Mon Jun 27, 2005 1:16 pm

I have an apt tomorrow, June 27th, with my sleep doctor concerning my insomnia. I consider my self a pretty educated patient, but can anyone think of any ?'s I should ask that I might miss myself? I wanna have my bases covered because I don't have insurance and want to get as much out of this apt as possible.

I started my APAP a couple nights ago, and know my doctor's going to say, "You will have many sleepless nights just getting use to the CPAP," but I do understand that and the fact it takes time to get use to it. But my insomnia has been going on for several years (I'm 23) and its time I did something about it.

I know about the sleep diary, and about the many possible causes of insomnia. I know its hard to pinpoint the main cause, and it might take 1 apt or 10 apts to figure it out. You fine people here (brown-nosing!) are QUITE the smart patients.

Anything you can think of that I should ask or be sure to go over?

Thanks in advance you intelligent Cpaptalk.com-ers

Insomnia

Cory, I've struggled with insomnia for a while too. It's really hard and I feel for you. I think my apnea initially caused me to become an insomniac, but then it took on a life of its own. I've learned a lot from fellow insomniacs at http://www.sleepnet.com. Visit their insomnia forums. There are no "easy" cures to insomnia and I can guarantee you, there are no pills that help in the long-term. They only cause addiction and other problems. Over time I've learned relaxation techniques and other things from sleepnet.com. They have helped. I'm not "over" my insomnia but it does not rule my life anymore. Slowly it's getting better. If you are currently on any meds, remember some meds cause insomnia. Feel free to ask me anything as I've been to many doctors and read just about everything about insomnia.
