Apnea Positive Pressure Long-Term Efficacy Study, the multi-center study will include 1,100 patients and is the largest clinical trial for a sleep disorder ever funded by the National Institutes of Health.

APPLES volunteers must be age 18 or older and have no other sleep disorders.

I would encourage people to read the criteria before calling the above posted number, as prior treatment with positive air pressure devices or surgery for apnea excludes participation, I don't think most on this board would qualify as a study participant.

heheh, well, I can think of a few who have mentioned having had their initial sleep study but are still waiting, waiting, waiting for the appointment to have their titration night and/or get their equipment.

But yeah, the vast majority of us wouldn't qualify...we already know what a "sham" pressure of "4" feels like.

It also requires 7 or more visits to a lab, and only 500 bucks? sheesh...

The worst night of my life was at the lab. No thanks on repeating it 7 times .

This is a new one for me. Just do not know what to say.

No wonder the people who dream up these studies make the big bucks. I could not have thought out the details of this study in a million years.

They seem to exclude anyone who may really have Apnea especially if there are any other closely related health problems. Seems to me young people over 18 who need the bucks, or anyone with time on their hands will jump at this opportunity.

Is this an example of tax dollars hard at work?

Is this an example of a well connected idiot seeking to make a name for himself - bucks as well?

Is this an example of some xPAP manufacturer getting inflated prices for out of date equipment?

I am probably being way to critical here, but I just do not like the idea of the exclusion criteria. Can you imagine what the results might produce if the sham pool consists of real Apneacs and the treated pool consists of healthy people. If you can figure that out, how about if the pools were reversed?

I don't think anyone who gets this message would qualify unless they were notified by their doctor?

You know what IS needed, is clinical trials of people who are not compliant to see if they have been misdiagnosed and actually require a BiPAP. This would be CO2 toxicity testing. Gotta wonder how many people have given up on CPAP therapy because they just "could not tolerate the mask/the pressure," but in actuality were not able to exhale against the pressure but didn't know it?
