needing help with filters

Post by alleluiasings » Sat Dec 01, 2007 11:11 am

I am using the Disposable White Filters for Puritan Bennett 420G, 420S, 420SP, 420E CPAPs and 425. The directions say, "insert it into the filter area first, mesh-side facing in, towards the device." When I look at the filter, I cannot determine which is the mesh side. Could you give me a clue? Also, should I have ordered the foam white filters to accompany the white filters or are they to be used separately? Thanks for any assistance. alleluiasings

The foam filters are mandatory, its the thin ones that are optional.

I to find those "mesh" instructions confusing - they may belong to another kind of filter. If the thin filters supplied by cpap.com have a mesh side to them, I haven't figured out which it is....

Generally when one puts in a filter if it is not the same on both sides, the smoothest side goes towards the machine and the rougher one towards the room. I don't have your machine, but in general that is how filters work.

Ummmmm......

Tips for inserting filters:

1. If you are using the disposable white filters, insert it into the filter area first, mesh-side facing in, towards the device.

2. Insert the gray foam filter into the filter area, on top of the fine filter.

Question for alleluiasings:

Where did you get your white filters?

I don't have that PB machine either and have never used the white ultrifine filters in my REMstar machines.....just the foam ones.

I have a Respironics machine with the white filters that have a plastic mesh on one side.

My husband has a GoodKnight machine and those white disposable filters don't have any mesh or any noticable difference on either side, so either side can face the machine. (The Puritan Bennett User's Manual doesn't say anything about a mesh side, so your instructions must have come with the replacement filters.)

The foam filter should have come with your machine and should always be used whether or not you use the optional disposable filters. Check your User Manual for cleaning instructions for the foam filter.

The PB thin filters, bought at cpap.com, do not have a discernible difference between their sides. I've bought about 50 of those through the years.

The mesh comment is relevant to Respironics filter apparently, but must have been carried over to the PB filters by mistake.

The PB manual has a
WARNING (Direction that indicates a potential risk of death or serious injury to the patient of caregiver)
In front of the following statement:
Never use the Goodknight 420 Evolution without an air inlet filter
.

The "air inlet filter" is the foam one.

The mesh side should be in towards the direction of the air flow.

Air flow> Mesh side > CPAP device

Reason... the Mesh gives the filter support.

Your home HVAC filters are installed the same way for the same reason.

The white or ultrafine for the Nellcor Puritan Bennet Machines (420 Series)have no plastic mesh side and the filters themselves can be used in any direction.
