Between a rock and a hard place!

Post by carlitguy » Fri Dec 28, 2007 9:12 am

I had a rough night last night which is unusual but it does happen occassionally.
I awoke at abopu three for a bathroom break. When I go back to bed I have trouble with getting back to sleep. I can not seem to breathe through my nose and I keep having the urge to open my mouth. Finally I take the mask off but then when I awake I feel terrible.
I have a humidifier and heated hose. A lot of nights I just go with the hose vecause I am not comfortable with the heat on my nose. I do have it turned down to 2 out of 5. Last night I did have the het on. Is this my issue? Or?

If you're trying no humidifier heat, then you might try turning off the hose heat as well. Some find that the cold passover humidified air helps clear the nasal passages.

Not a doctor, of course....but I periodically have issues with breathing through my nose, I just get congested. When that happens I rinse my nose with saline using a neti-pot. I know people who rinse every day, I absolutely dispise it and only rinse when I am congested. But I end up blowing my nose for about 20 minutes after and can breathe fine. You might want to give it a try. There are also saline nose sprays you can use.

Give the saline a try and see if that helps.

I've found that while I don't like warm air blowing in my face and snozz, I do need enough humidity to be able to breathe and sleep comfortably. That means there are times I have to adjust the humidity up or down from night to night and even sometimes during the same night. Not often, but on occasion.

I've also found that if I keep the mask on, even tho having to cheat a few times and gasp for air thru my mouth, w/in a few minutes my nasal passages clear from the humidity and pressure and I'm good to go the rest of the night.

And there is always the option of keeping a good saline nasal spray handy for those bathroom trips that end w/a stuffy nose back in bed.

Sometimes if your mouth feels a bit "sticky", you can "snuff" some of that thick saliva down into your mouth, use your tongue to "peel" it off your uvula, swallow it w/a bit of water or pull it out on some tissue and you can breathe better.

Blowing your nose before putting your mask back on. Laying to one side or the other for the mucus to drip over to the other side for a more balanced sinus load. You just have to experiment to find what works for you.
