Aflex question

I haven't been on this board for a while until now. I am getting a new machine. My doctor prescribed a CPAP machine. Here are the questions:

1. Is A-FLEX and AUTO CPAP with C-Flex the same thing. If not which machines (REMSTAR) have A-FLEX

2. Should I get an A-FLEX if my doctor did not specify A-FLEX

3. Does my prescription have to specify A-FLEX for me to get it or can I get A-FLEX with just a CPAP presciption.[/list]

The Auto with A-Flex is a fairly recent machine. There is only one machine with it and it's made by Respironics.

The Auto with C-Flex is not the Auto with A-Flex.....although the Auto w/A-Flex DOES have the C-Flex option.

In order to get a local DME to get you an Auto with A-Flex, your prescription would have to have the "A-Flex" specified on it.....otherwise it's hard telling what you'd get.

I'm not going to speculate as to whether you SHOULD get it, but if you DO get it and you don't like the A-Flex option, you can always turn it off.

So, what is APAP? Is that an auto adjusting CPAP or A-Flex or someting totally different?

Yes, APAP is the Auto-adjusting CPAP machines.

A-Flex is a new breathing relief technology in one of the Respironics' APAPs.

I've never used it, so can't comment on the effects. I believe it only works in "Auto" mode with a range of pressures.

as mentioned by Den, Aflex machine includes the cflex feature, get your doctor to specify "Aflex" on the script, you are pretty much assured it will eliminate the DME from jacking you around with substitutions.

Get Aflex you get an auto.

No (at least not here in Canada) Although having it on your prescription will make it easier to get.

My suggestion is that it might be worth a try.

Everyone's needs are different; however, I can tell you that after 2 yrs on C-Flex, I find that after one month on A-Flex that I genuinely prefer it.

As others have said, if you for some reason found that you did not like A-Flex auto, you can set the machine to C-Flex CPAP.

Good luck finding the machine that best suits you.

I recently upgraded to the REMstar Auto M-series with A-flex from the REMstart Auto with c-flex. What I have noticed and liked about A-flex. A-flex seems to track your breathing better. If you can get it... I say go for it.

Insist on an A-Flex machine.

If your prescription says A-Flex, the DME is required to provide A-Flex. If your prescription says cpap or apap, the DME can provide A-Flex but they may try to give you a cheaper machine.

I had a prescription for apap and the DME ordered a C-Flex for me. I refused delivery.

The DME then insisted the machine sitting on the table was an A-Flex. A 10-minute battle of words ensued and I kept standing there smiling and saying I was not taking anything but an A-Flex and that machine on the table is not an A-Flex.

The RT then excused herself from the room for five minutes. When she returned I was still standing in the middle of the room smiling. She told me they were ordering an A-Flex for me and it was delivered the next week.

Great machine that has capability of A-Flex (3 relief modes), C-Flex, APAP and CPAP!

If you want to avoid a bunch of crap with a DME, get the doc to specify A-Flex on the script.

I've had my M Series Auto CPAP with A-Flex for two months. It is WONDERFUL! I highly recommend this machine--mine is silent, cannot even hear it all. The only thing I hear is the mask exhaust, but that's, of course, unavoidable.

What Rooster and everyone else said ...

I have both Auto w/CFLEX and an auto w/AFLEX. As for which is most quiet, for ME they are both equally quiet ... for others it is one or the other. As Rested Gal has stated before, it seems to be the luck of the draw. Nevertheless, I think the options are more important for me and the AFLEX wins on that comparison.

Get the AFLEX machine and be a happy PAPer ... having it specified on the Rx leaves no hanky panky bait and switch options for the used car salesman ... I mean DME
