Nasal Congested and CPAP

Post by soulrhythm » Mon Dec 10, 2007 5:49 pm

I am having my first really stuffed-up nose since being on CPAP and am wondering what effects others have with nasal congestion and CPAP usage (sleep quality, APAP presuures, AHI's, mouth breathing, etc...)?

Also, what "tricks" have people found helpful duing these times?

For some reason, I have this problem almost 24/7. The only thing that works for me at night is decongestant sprays. My doctor just tears me up everytime I go and he asks about it. But I only use them at night. Otherwise, I cant use my machine.

After experimenting with my humidifier setting during my first week I ended up leaving it on 5. Last month I came down with a terrible sinus infection while on vacation. Here it is a month later and I'm still fighting the sinus infection and the cough.

Last week the edge of both nostrils became raw from my nasal pillows, no amount of strap loosening helped, and I had heavy nasal congestion. I bought a tube of Ayr, applied it 3 or 4 times a day and again before placing my pillows up to my nostrils. The first night there was no change to my sore nostrils or congestion and cough. Experimenting the next night, I lowered my humidifier setting to 2, applied Ayr to my nostrils, put on my nasal mask and had a wonderful night of sleep.

Since lowering my humidifier setting from 5 to 2 my sinus congestion is greatly improved, my nostrils are no longer sore, and my cough seems to be greatly improved. I'm now of the belief that the higher humidity was the culprit.

OSA Sleep Test 8/29/07, AHI 64, Sat. 74%
Titrated 10/1/07, Pressure 13
Re-titrated 9/29/08, Pressure 15/10
BiPAP set at 15/10

Search the forum or google nasal saline rinse ... it's the most effective way recover from or prevent sinus congestion.
