Travelling to Scotland

Post by djv1255 » Thu Jun 02, 2005 8:10 am

I will be travelling to Scotland for the World's Science Fiction convention at the end of July. On their BBS, they are having a discussion on distilled water.
Where to buy it in Glasgow and elsewhere in Scotland? What is it called? Is it really distilled the way US uses the term?

Any input?

djv,

I've only travelled in Scotland pre-CPAP, so I didn't face that. However I do know that regular non-carbonated drinking water is referred to as "still" water, so that can be a confusion. I suspect that people need to use it in their irons over there also, so it is probably available at grocery stores or the "chemist".

A couple of important things to know:

You will be frowned at if you request "Scotch". What you want is single-malt whisky, and note that whisky is not spelled whiskey like it is in the U.S.

Ale "strengths" are identified by old English currency designations. So, typical ales are 60, 70, and 80 shilling ales. Those 90 and above are "WeeHeavy" ales that may require a fork to consume. I like heavy ales, but 80 shilling is even a bit substantial for me.

Enough 70-shilling ales and you won't worry about your CPAP, but of course, you won't feel too well in the morning.

That's my Scotland survival guide! Cheers!

I just use bottled water over there. Tap water was fine also. Much better tasting than in Texas. Be careful of the bathtubs they are very deep and water pressure is very good. No water saving devices there. I've used showers that compared to fire hoses here . Volume, volume. And when the toilet flushes there are no survivors. WOOOOOsh.

Scotland is one of the greatest places I have ever been. The people are firendly, the lager is cold, and the whole place is magical. I was there in 1986, before cpap, when I still wore size 14 1/2 shirts ( That's a US size for males). This was also before the bottled water craze. You should have no problem finding a litre of distilled water in a grocery store. Don't worry about asking if you can't find it, they do speak English there, unlike in Newcastle. Make sure you walk the mile in Edinburgh and go to the great art museum there, also the Burrell Museum in Glasgow, and don't forget Inverness and, hmm I can't spell it, Drumanodrochit? Scotland is small, I think it's about the size of Maine. The bridge across the Firth of Forth is one of the world's great bridges, equal I would say to the Golden Gate. I did all this and more in 5 or 6 days there.
