Having been a DME guy since cpaps were basically reverse vacuums (come to think of it, they still are) I will state the obvious. No cpap manufacture suggests any cpap blower service other than filter changes and damp cloth exterior cleaning. In the very old days of cpap there were some issues of machine pressures drifting. Those problems are effectively gone now, regardless of brand. So bottom line, there is really nothing for them to do with the machine.

SMDS - Sudden Machine Death Syndrome... Yes, I have seen a few thousand of those.

i'm not a dme basher----some people buy extended warrenties--some don't--i don't think,,and you asked for opinions--that its wise to give them your balloons unless there's something wrong with your machine--after all you got a owners manual with it-that states how to take care of it----just my thoughts--pat

Special thanks to DME Daddy for answering the question, among others. In particular, that the issue of fluctuation in pressure is a nonissue now. And I have my filters from cpap.com, so I am set to go. And I feel confident in avoiding a sixty dollar charge for nothing.

The DME I did business with (a subsidiary of a succcessful local medical supplier) is partnered with the hospital, so it was just a walk down the hall to get a machine after the Rx was written. They really wanted to upgrade me on the mask, but at prices two to four times what cpap.com asks, I declined. The fitting of the basic mask was horrible. The first night it was lifting off the bridge of my nose at each exhale. I solved the problem with the smaller seal that was provided. When I tried to complain over their internet site, the message could not be sent because they coded a bad address in the software. I called the head office, and was told they do not have a customer relations person, as the local branches served that purpose. The general manager was offered to me instead, and she did not call. I called the local office manager, and he responded with an email a week later, just after the GM called, where he made me feel it was all my fault. You can guess who got a copy of that email.

And now they want me to come back for an annual machine checkup and a new mask. What did PT Barnum say?

p.s. Here in Ontario, a three year warranty is required. And with government support and no personal insurance, the pricing and economics are way different from what you experience in the states. For example, my basic CPAP equipment was priced at $1040, of which I paid $260. This might cost a bit over $400 from cpap.com, but would be all out of my pocket. If I wanted to upgrade, it would have to be from an Ontario DME at inflated prices, and it would be entirely out of my pocket.

In ontario if you go with a adp supplier ohip controls the price of all regular cpap's $1040 . Auto cpap's are controled to 1500-1600 . However there are several requirements to order an auto pap (there must be at least 4cm between rem and non rem etc)
