Really Need HELP!!!

Post by pippincat » Mon Nov 19, 2007 9:45 pm

Hello all,

I am really having a problem. I am continuing to get severe nose bleeds. Per my sleep clinic doctor, I have switched masks from an OptiLife to the Liberty Mirage where I can open my mouth and take the pressure off my nose. I have upped the humifier to the limit on what I can tolerate and sleep. I have seen my family doctor to ensure there was no underlying medical condition for my nose bleeds (there wasn't). Looking up my nose, she could not see anything that could be cauterized. I am at my wits end. I had a bad one last night and just had another one about an hour ago. I can't go on like this, but I can't live without my CPAP either.

Please any suggestions would be appreciated.

Insist that you need to see an ENT promptly... nose bleeds like that are not a good thing, and need to be dealt with (whatever the cause really is).

It could be a medication side effect, or some other medical problem.

I don't know if I've got any ideas....but, out of curiosity.....what's your pressure?

Do you have any other full face masks?

My doctor recommended applying a small amount of Vaseline into each nostril to keep the passages moist (they tend to dry out and bleed with xPAP). I try to remember to do it in the morning so it does not inhibit a good seal on the nasal pillows.

Seems to be working for me, but your results may vary...

A real normal FF mash might help where you would breath through your mouth and not force air through your nose, might help but for sure you have to get this under control. Jim

If all else fails, you might want to consider and oral only mask like the Oracle:

I see that you are using a nasal pillows type mask. I can't use nasal pillows because they really irritate my nostrils, to the point that if I could tolerate them for more than a day or two, I would probably get nosebleeds. Do you get nosebleeds if you use a cup-type mask? If you haven't yet tried switching, seems like that would be the first thing to do.

I would never put a petroleum product in my nose - ie. Vaseline!!!! And a doctor should know better!!!!
This link is specifically for Vicks Vapo-rub, however note that the doctor in the verbiage notes that it's not the camphor but the petroleum product that should be avoided in the nose, as when it is aspirated into the lung tissues it can cause a form of pneumonia.....well rather than me paraphrasing -- here's the link:

When I was young I couldn't turn my head without getting a nosebleed. The problem was tiny blood vessels close to the surface so my ENT at the time cauterized both nostrils to burn out the surface vessels. The only time I've had any nosebleeds since is when I had direct contact with something on the nose.
It wasn't the most pleasant experience I've ever had, but it did work.
I would definitely see an ENT post haste!!!!

Good luck!!
cheers

I heartily second both of goose's points.

Here'a link to Mayo Clinic web site and petroleum jelly on nose:

You may also want to check that your HH is really working ... have you used your finger to see if the water feels warm to the touch?

I noticed that you are using the Liberty? It still uses nasal pillows if I'm reading it correctly ... you might want to change to a "regular" full-face mask. I've been doing that since I've had frequent nose bleeds for as long as I can remember ... especially in winter. The first cold morning I had a major nose bleed when removing my nasal pillow mask.

Since then, I've been fanatical about making sure my HH is turned on and have mostly been using a FFM.
