Puffy eyelids?

Post by wyfan64 » Sat Nov 24, 2007 10:21 am

Hi, I am new here and thrilled to find a site with so much information! I use a full face mask the Mirage Ultra and my area under each eye is puffy as can be every morning. And stay that way much of the day. Anyone know the reason or have a similar problem?

I'm not an ENT or even a doctor for that matter, but my guess is that the air is leaking and irritating your eyes causing inflamation (or air is too cold and dry for your sinuses).

1) fix leaks
2) take an anti-inflamatory
3) place cold towel over your eye lids in the morning when you wake.

Best of luck and welcome to the group!

wyfan64,

Your issue was raised a few weeks ago by another member who received a number of replies. You might want to review the following thread:

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info DreamStalker and Papoose! I did purchase the nasal pillow mask hoping it might correct this problem. I am still trying it off and on, but I think my pressure might be too high for that type. I'm 15/1 or something like that. (I dont have all the lingo down yet sorry) I do have my full mask pretty tight to avoid leaking sounds. I guess that could be it also?

Almost forty years ago, when I was working as an assistant to my aunt, who was an ophthamologist, my tear drainage duct became blocked for some reason. (The pain was really intense) When she used a needle to unblock the drain I got a syringe full of saline solution in the back of my throat, via my sinuses. so there is a connection, in my head, between the tear system and sinuses.

I woke up again this morning with swollen eyelids, not because I forgot to put my eye mask on, but because I forgot to pull it over my eyes (and I'm not even blonde). It doesn't help much when it is protecting my forehead.

My eyelids seem to swell even if my mask doesn't leak much, so I suspect the high pressure of having something to do with it. The eye mask helps a lot.

I do believe there is a connection from the tear ducts to the sinuses. As a kid, I overdid it one time with Murine. I tasted the Murine draining down the back of my throat.

Your tears do drain into your throat. There is a sinus/throat/eye connection. This is why when you get the flu it can turn to conjunctivitis (pink eye) and why if you blow your nose to hard you get bubbles comming out of the tear ducts (for us lucky ones). I also had swollen eyes every day when I was using the UMFF.

Try fixing any leaks in your mask-this happened to me when I was a newbie. Another thing that works great to relieve the swelling-keep 2 teaspoons in the freezer and just press them against the swelling and after 5 minutes or so you'll see a significant difference.

Thank you all for all the ideas. I really appreciate them all so much. I am feeling much less tired now on the machine. I just wished I didnt LOOK so tired! My under eyes stay puffy 24/7 now. Not a good look for an over 40 woman
