GERD and poor cpap results

Post by Guest » Thu Nov 15, 2007 2:50 pm

I have been reading this site occasionally for a long time. You convinced me to buy my own apap with software.

Since I have the software to check my results every day, I notice that I do well some nights (AHI < 5) and poorly other nights.

The nights I do poorly the AHI is often around 10. When I look at the detail graph I see 80 events occuring in a 60 to 90 minute period. Ooh, that makes me feel horrible. There may be nearly zero events the remainder of the night.

I have starting noticing that the nights my acid reflux is active are the nights with around 80 events.

This seems strange. What is going on? Does acid reflux cause my apnea? The doctors and technicians have never mentioned this.

It doesn't cause it, but does seem to go along with it a lot of the time. See if your MD will put you on something like Nexium or Prevacid, etc. I personally just take a small Tums before bed and find it very adequate. I would also investigate raising the head of your bed a little (that's all it takes) one way or another as it also helps a lot.

Also, it's highly recommended to NOT eat within 3 hours of bedtime.

If you've been reading this site, then you know that the subject comes up rather frequently and if you do a Search of "GERD" or "reflux", you'll find quite a bit of reading.

You might be waking up from coughing. Acid can come up your throat and cause coughing, wheezing, etc. I agree.....don't eat anything after dinner. Don't lay down for at least an hour after you eat anything. Avoid those trigger foods. I'm on calcium/magnesium and didn't realize until recently that that's probably why I'm not having reflux any more.
Also, don't do much leaning over after you eat or before bed. Cut back on your carbs too. Try not to have any fun at all. Good luck to you.
