DRY mouth

Post by Kharris » Thu Nov 01, 2007 10:35 am

I like my nasal mask, and have not needed a chin strap. But 2 nights in a row, I have woken up with my mouth so dry it was almost painful.
Is it possible to just have my mouth hanging open, and not be losing
air pressure? Because if you have ever tried to talk, or breathe through
your mouth, you know the feeling of the air going from your nose straight
out of your mouth, and never getting to your lungs. And I don't remember
anything like that waking me up.
my maching has no data recording capacity, it simply records blower run
time and hours used. It's really a leaf blower in disguise
this has happened twice, I have simply gotten a drink of water, and gone
right back to sleep.I do remember dreaming, and trying to talk while dreaming, I wondered if that might be part of this.
Something funny, I think I have had more dreams since starting therapy.
Maybe cause the sleep I am getting is deeper and more restful?

And FYI, being better rested does lead to increased feelings of " friskiness"
however I do not reccomend rolling over and smooching your spouse
on the mouth WITHOUT removing your mask first. It will leave a mark.

Ohh ouch sounds painful!
(I DO second the friskiness comment )

As for the dry mouth, I had what they call "lip flutter" (not mouth breathing) and it never woke ME up, but it sure woke my BF up. He said it was really really loud and was amazed that it didn't wake me up. Though when I would finally wake up, my mouth and throat would be sore and dry as hell. Basically my lips would part just a millimeter or so and air would escape. sort of like when go you "pffffff" to something stupid. hmmmm well , when I do it anyway So it wasn't a massive amount of air that was escaping but it was enough to lose therapy and get dry mouth/throat.
The only conclusive evidence for me was that after I started taping, the dry mouth/throat went away.

You can bet your therapy is going out your mouth while you sleep. This is a common occurrence with nasal masks, or any mask, besides the ff type. I use an ace bandage cut to the right length to go around my neck and over my mouth. I stick a piece of tape to the inside of the ace over the area of my lips to soften the pressure. This keeps the air going into my lungs instead of out the mouth. It works for me. jim

I have been woken by my own lip flutter. It is a funky sound! But I trained myself (Who said you can't teach not so old guys new tricks! ) to keep my mouth closed and it don't happen any more now..

Yes to both your questions:

Your "mouth breathing" and the therapy air is rushing out of you mouth and drying it (it can be very painful as I know from personal experience).

And you're dreaming more bacause you're finally getting to that stage of sleep in which we dream.

I thought after several months that because I was able to talk to my wife while machine was on blowing air, that I finally had learned to not breath through my mouth, probably even posted my success, well after getting savvy on Encore Pro, I listened to the experience's of members using the air leakage chart, and saw all the spikes I was having, I went back to using a chin strap, and the leakage line improved, I do have good AHI numbers, but I'm wondering how much better I will feel if improving those leakage spikes, what you experience while awake mouth breathing, is not the same as when your sleeping and your muscles relax, so next step is taping, looking for a almost straight curve line, I must be slow because its taking me a year to start figuring this all out.

I get dry mouth sometimes with my Hybrid although I got dry mouth all the time , every night, with full face masks.
I assume you have your humidity as high as you can without running dry by morning.
I find it helpful to rinse out my mouth with warm water before bed and keeping a glass of warm water by my bedside.
The Hybrid will gently convert you into sleeping with your mouth closed if you DO NOT cut off the chin flap. I only open my mouth now to breathe if I have a bad cold or something blocking my nasal airway.
I have been using the Hybrid mask for over a year and it has helped me breathe properly over time. The engineer at the Innomed-Respcare facility told me it would do that last year when they were helping in customer service around the time the Hybrid was first introduced. He was right. It has worked wonderfully and my therapy has improved 100%.
Try the warm water and if your budget allows, try the Hybrid with the chin flap gently keeping your mouth in a position that is conducive to breathing comfortably with your nose and opening your mouth comfortably only when absolutely necessary.

Last night, I used some Mary Kay skin emollient goop. My wife uses it,
and no it's not make-up. It' very vaseline-like. I guess it was sticky enough
that I didn't have a problem last night.
I'm still going to make a home-made chin strap. My therepy is working,
and I'd hate something like this to interfere.
thanks for all your ideas.
