Polident Strips. A few questions.

Post by Flying_Norseman » Wed Oct 03, 2007 9:37 am

I have read what I could find on this topic, but I am still a bit confused. I purchased some polident strips today and I am unclear how to apply them properly.

Do you put them on one lip or both?

In order for your mouth to be sealed to you apply them so they over lap? Obviously, people's mouths are not in a straight line.

I have read that people cut the strips lengthwise, but they seem rather narrow as it is.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Flying Norseman!

I just started using the strips about a week ago. I wasn't sure either but they are short and narrow so I tried the following:

hold my lips together
apply 2 strips in up-down direction - one on each side

They come off fairly easily but seem to be doing the job -- I'm no longer waking up with chipmunk cheeks

I'm sure there are many on this forum who have more experience with these!

Mindy

I wet both lips and put a strip on the bottom lip and then close my mouth. It takes about 15 seconds of holding the lips tightly. Working great for me.
I just want to go back to sleep!

Hi I tried them (poligrip strips) for the first time last night.

I bent it into a v shape per badbreaths advise and wet lips slightly centering the strip on lower lip and pressing lips tightly together for a short period of time

much nicer than mouth taping.

Btw I thought they were too narrow for cutting in half lenghtwise also

I understand

some cut a v in the center of strip to facilitate bending but it is not necessary

Some cut in half to make two short strips and put on lips with a gap in the middle

Hope that helps

I cut mine in two equal halves - put it in the middle of my lips, where they naturally meet and feel comfortable, wet with my tongue and let it stick! This gives me a little of room on each side to slip in a straw - I get up and need water! Works like a charm!

Unfortunately, I don't think those methods would work for me because I am more of a puffer than a mouth breather. My mouth doesn't really open up. I puff air out of my lips so they would have to be completely sealed, I am guessing.

I'm a puffer, too. I tape, but the puffing was making the tape leak during the night, as I'd puff little parts of it off.

What has worked for me it to use a "mouthband." Jeff H posted a picture of him wearing one. This holds your cheeks in and seems to prevent the "blowfish effect" where your cheeks fill up with air. It really works great for me. Here's the link with the picture

You can use an ace bandage, too.

Thanks for the tip, Rosemary. All of this seems like a lot to go through to avoid a FF mask. I don't get to try one until next week so I might give your suggestion a shot.

I forgot to say that I tried something different than a headband like JeffH. What seems to work best for me is Johnson & Johnson First Aid Hurt-Free Wrap (2 inch wide). I got it at Walgreen's. The headband did the job but left bad marks in the morning which took hours to go away. This is much softer and lighter. Kind of like an Ace bandage but easier on the skin. I just tie in in the back.

I'm going to try Poligrip strips tonight.

PS There are a number of people who report being able to stop blowfish by sticking their tongues to the top of their mouth. I've been trying to do this, and I start out going to sleep with it like that. Then I relax and my tongue must too, because I can feel my cheek puff out right when I start to fall asleep. I'm going to keep trying though. I've tried a FF mask (hybrid) and my throat got very, very dry. This gave me a bad dry cough. I plan to use the hybrid when I'm sick, though.
