Post by sleepyred » Tue Oct 02, 2007 4:30 pm

For those of you who have an Aussie Heated hose - how do you clean it?

TIA!

I have 2 of them, never have cleaned either one. I figure I'm not breathing back into the hose so there is no need to clean it.

It is always blowing away from the machine. Now if you have a dead fish or a rat doing the back stroke in your humidifier tank you may need to clean the hose.

I haven't cleaned a hose in 7 years.

someday science will catch up to what I'm saying...

Ditto.

Same here, except it's been 4 years for me.

If I were going to clean the heated hose though, I'd just pour in a cup or so of vinegar/water solution, slosh it around inside a few times, rinse out well.

I might follow that with a couple tablespoons of baking soda in a cup of water...slosh that around in the hose awhile to kill the vinegar smell. Rinse well.

I'd be careful not to get the hose cover wet.

Actually, I'll just keep on not doing what I've been not doing. It's just filtered air and water vapor (I use only distilled water) going up through my hose.

I've just bought one.
The instructions say that cleaning it is a personal hygiene choice, and some people do so rarely.

The instructions say to to make sure you are careful to keep any water inside the tube. They suggest gently "sloshing" about a cupful of water or water with very small amount of mouthwash.
they suggest placing plastic bags or plastic cling wrap round the apertures and securing with elastic bands before sloshing.

Thanks, Moby. Since I never intended to wash mine, I never read that.

A neat trick that someone posted once...can't remember who...was to use a plastic hose connector (if you happen to have one) to connect both ends of a hose together making one continuous circle out of the hose. Oh, and put the soapy water or whatever into the hose first...lol.

With the hose connected securely to itself you can slosh with abandon.

A hose connector like this:

A person might find the same kind'a thing at Lowe's or Home Depot. Just take a hose along with you to see if something in the PVC bins fits.

I read that post, too, and got one of those connectors for hose cleaning. It works great.

I'd be careful of using vinegar followed by baking soda. Make sure to rinse out all the vinegar first or you may have a fizzy reaction which might not be so good for the hose material.

If the vinegar doesn't hurt the tube then the reaction of the vinegar's acid being neutralized by the baking soda will be even more harmless. The only issue would be pressure generated by the reaction if you used the trick of looping the ends of the hose together with a connector.

Never cleaned mine either, and never had an odor.
If it's good enough for Rested Gal and Snoredog, it's good enough for me!
Cheers,
Lee Ann

Have had mine for 10 months and have not cleaned it. I've been using the unheated hose this summer and just a couple weeks ago got the heated hose out. It looks and smells fine. I did run some soapy water in the unheated hose before putting it away for the winter since I was washing my mask and filter at the time. Normally I don't wash that hose either.
