Auto Off Feature

Post by FlowGenerator » Tue Oct 02, 2007 4:03 am

I'm currently using a Respironics A-Flex machine. What are the advantages or disadvantages of having the "Auto On" feature turned on or off?

On my APAP with C-Flex, "Auto On" is always enabled. It's not an option. It allows me to turn on the machine just by putting on the mask and taking a few breaths.
Very handy, I use it every night.

On my machine, "Auto OFF" is an option. If I turned this on, it would automatically shut the machine OFF if I removed the mask. At least, I think that's how it works. I don't use it.
Instead, I turned the "Mask Off Alarm" on the day I got the machine. That way, if I remove the mask in the middle of the night, I will be "reminded" to put it right back on.The idea is to prevent bad habits, like removing my mask at night.
If I got something wrong, I hope someone will correct me!

LyleHaze is correct. There is no setting to be able to turn off the "Auto On" feature. It's a safety feature.

I also have my Patient Disconnect/(Auto Off) feature turned off. I don't want it beeping at me in the middle of the night if I have a large leak.....I just want it to keep blowing air.

On the Resmeds there are two options: SmartStart and Leak Alert. I can enable or disable either one.

Personally I don't care for either and have both disabled. For one thing it takes too long to turn off when I remove my mask and I don't like the noise of the machine running w/no mask on when I get up during the night plus I'm not comfortable w/whether that extra running time w/o mask affects my stats or not.

I've not had a problem w/removing my mask except twice in almost 12 months. And both times I was aware of taking it off to go to the bathroom and when I climbed back in bed, just laying there too tired to put the mask back on and thinking I'll just lay here a minute before I put it back on - and waking up in the morning w/my mask off.

I take that back! I DO remember ONE time waking up w/o my mask on and NOT remembering taking it off.

As far as the Leak Alert, I discovered fairly early that "I" was much more sensitive to mask leaks than my Resmeds are. They tolerate and compensate for a much higher leak rate than I allow. I dislike minor leaks, especially those that try to occur around my eyes.

The Auto Off feature is a pain in the but. It can sometimes shut off if you have a large leak and it can also shut off if you shallow breath. I have my auto off turned to he off position.
