Can middle-of-the-night panic attacks trigger central apnea?

Post by Auricula » Mon Sep 24, 2007 2:23 am

I woke up at 1 feeling panicky over a family stressor and started to hyperventilate, taking very shallow panting breaths (like the Lamaze breaths for labor and delivery), and I became cold and shivery. A long hot shower calmed me down somewhat but when I tried sleeping again with the mask I could not relax and breathe normally and could not fall asleep. Several times I had to force myself to take a breath and I couldn't take in much air. Could such a pattern trigger central apneas?

Right now I am exhausted but don't want to go back to bed; my nose and ears are clogged and I won't be able to breathe against the pressure. I had no cold or allergy symptoms before the event that triggered the stress occurred.

Central apnea occurs when your brain just doesn't (or forgets to) breathe, and I can't see any connection between your occurrence and that - it is the opposite of something being triggered, and what it (CA) needs IS a trigger, not the absence of one, which it seems to have, plus I think you either 'have it' or you don't, and an episode of hypervent. would seem very unlikely to bring it on.
