Tried something new this week for sleep problem.

Post by oceanpearl » Thu Sep 20, 2007 5:33 pm

After reading an article in Fortune Magazine about one of the wealthiest men in the US. He was asked to what he owed his vitality at his age and he answered Acai. He said that since he stumbled onto it his arthritis had quit acting up. That didn't get me because arthritis is a sort of come and go thing.
What did impress me is that he said in the 10 yrs he has been using Acai that he hasn't had to take a sleeping pill..
I Googled it and found some at a reasonable price and ordered a case.
Night one (without Ambien) I logged over 10 hrs on the machine.
Night two I logged over 8.5 hrs,
Before this I was lucky to log 6.5 hrs with Ambien.
I will keep this thread up to date and we will see what happens long term.
Found the Acai here
http://www.puritan.com/pages/file.asp?x ... &CPID=8479. I got 288 ounces for 83 dollars. This should last for almost 5 months. A lot cheaper that Ambien.
I just want to go back to sleep!

Interesting. Thanks for posting.

I assume you have some trouble with arthritis?

Occasionally I have some knee and neck pain if I overdo it. I just finished retiling a shpwer and bathroom floor, while replacing an alternator on my car and I am beginning to wish that I had gotten someone else to do it.
So far I haven't noticed any difference in the arthritic pain. It's worth the price if it helps me to get another hour and a half sleep at night.
As a side note, a friend of mine who is a doctor told me that every doctor he knows takes antioxidants and none of them recommend it to their patients. WONDER WHY??
I just want to go back to sleep!

OceanPearl, How do you take the stuff? Is it a drink or what? How does it taste?

DUDE!!! OP, at your age, you need to slack off just a tiny bit!!!! Retiling and car repair? Not in the same day!!!!

Sheesh! Haven't you heard of RETIREMENT??? I think you need to go to Hilton Head and rest.

Thanks for the tip!

Cheers,
B.

Love Google.....

en DOT wikipedia.org/wiki/Acai

www DOT acai.vg/

www DOT oprah.com/presents/2005/young/life/life_acai.jhtml

So, it's the latest health fad. From the Wiki article, it appears that the stuff being sold to us in the US is either frozen or freeze-dried. From my basic nutrition classes, I learned that "juice from concentrate" is CRAP and not worth the price.

Hence, I'm wondering if Acai "juice" made from freeze dried acai is really worth bothering with?

OP - I never discount the placebo affect. Rock on if it works for you!!!

Cheers,
B.

They class the product as "organic" I don't know if it is a reconstitued product or not. I did find this.
Acai Berry nutrient composition
Phytochemical and Nutrient Composition of the Freeze-Dried Amazonian Palm Berry, Euterpe oleraceae Mart. ( Acai ).

A standardized freeze-dried acai fruit pulp / skin powder was used for all analyses and tests. Among many findings, anthocyanins, proanthocyanidins, and other flavonoids were found to be the major phytochemicals. Two anthocyanins, cyandin 3-glucoside and cyanidin 3-rutinoside were found to be predominant; three others were also found as minor anthocyanins. The total content of anthocyanins was measured as 3.1 mg/g dry weight. Polymers were found to be the major proanthocyanidins. The concentration of total proanthocyanidins was calculated as 13 mg/g dry weight Other flavonoids, namely, homoorientin, orientin, isovitexin, scoparin, and taxifolin deoxyhexose, along with several unknown flavonoids, were also detected. Resveratrol was found but at a very low concentration. In addition, components including fatty acids, amino acids, sterols, minerals, and other nutrients were analyzed and quantified. Total polyunsaturated fatty acid, total monounsaturated fatty acid, and total saturated fatty acids contributed to 11%, 60%, and 28% of total fatty acid. Oleic acid (53%) and palmitic acid (26%) were found to be the two dominant fatty acids. Nineteen amino acids were found; the total amino acid content was determined to be 7% of total weight. The total sterols accounted for 0.048% by weight of powder. The three sterols B-sitosterol, campesterol, and sigmasterol were identified."
