As some of you know I am new to the forum and the society of the mask. I have been on Bipap for just over a week. The following question may well be way off base but the folks who follow this board seem a friendly lot. What I am curious about started up with me about the same time the apnea episodes began.
When I shower after moderate exercise I have an odor of amonia in my nose. It is not apparant to my wife who states she does not smell it. So I believe it to be in my own nasal passages some way. I have asked the family doc about it and he has no explanation. Since this started about the same time frame as the apnea I am now curious if there might be a connection. Anyone else have similar experiance. Probably no connection at all, but I am curious. Possibly some connection to central apnea?
Apnea and unusual smell
I noticed some odd odors after I started using a mask, turned out it was the chemical smell embedded in the filters used in my machine. The scent stuck with me well into the morning and was especially noticeable when I showered. Once I wash, wash, washed the filters out like crazy, it really helped solve that.
Other suggestions - try a different type of water in the humidifier if you have one - city water may be treated (with chlorine, for instance), and you're picking up the scent that way.
All this assumes, though, that you are on a mask - wasn't sure by reading your post. There are some medications and allergic reactions that can make you smell odd smells, as well, but I wouldn't know where to start on that - I've just heard about it.

You've already seen the replies, MoSleep. I'm just posting the link for any others who might still be wondering. It was a good question with some interesting replies.
