Taping nostrils

Post by Flying Norseman » Fri Sep 07, 2007 5:50 pm

I have the Mirage Swift 2 Nasal Pillows system and I am curious if it would be helpful to use tape to make sure there is a good seal on my nostrils. I think I am getting a good seal, but I keep thinking about it as I fall asleep. Is there a reason not to do this? I was thinking about using some medical tape that won't hurt when pulled off. Will the tape damage the pillows? Thanks for any advice you can give me.

I'd be very cautious with adhesive on the pillows. It seems that a number of things can cause them to deteriorate. If you get adhesive on them, you could have a sticky mess, too.

Not sure what you mean by taping the nostrils, though.

I mean taping them so they seal with the pillows once they are inserted in the nose.

Is it double sided tape? I can't envision how tape would help them seal otherwise. It seems that it would be more likely to interfere with a seal than help it.

If you are having problems with the pillows sealing, tape is not the answer.

I guess that was a crazy idea. On my third night with the Swift II, I realized I could loosen my head straps a lot more than I thought and still keep a seal. I just have to get out of the habit of checking for a seal constantly as I fall asleep. I'm the kind of person who checks the burners on the stove three or four times to make sure they are off.

Looking for a good seal

Nothing wrong with thinking out of the box to try and find ways to make this treatment work better for you. Bouncing ideas off each other sometimes leads us to the answers we were seeking.

I do not use the mask you use, but with 3 other pillows style masks I have used I've found that tying an extra strap around the nosepiece has worked to secure a seal. Just gotta be careful not to position the strap in a way it can slide and cover the vent hole(s). Others may offer suggestions with your specific mask.

In a little time the feel and sounds of your mask will be more familiar and you won't feel the need to constantly check it. I changed masks a few months ago, and the sounds were different. I found myself checking and rechecking it for several days.

Your desire to make this work will work for you. Best wishes.

Kathy

Thanks Kathy. I am sure you are right. The mask I use actually keeps a good seal so I am sure I will get used to it.

The Swift II is a dependable basic mask for me. I can even wear glasses with it, so it's a good mask if I want to read myself to sleep. I've been using the Nasal Aire II and find it a bit better for side sleeping than the Swift, which was my first mask.

The Nasal Aire II looks interesting. It looks like it might feel like it is strangling me though. I am happy with the Swift II for now. I'll wait six months and do some research in the meantime to see if I stay with it. I just wish I had gotten a machine that gave better information. I have only had it for about 10 days so maybe I can get a different one.
