how to clean mask when sick?

Post by catbirdgirl » Tue Aug 28, 2007 6:02 am

I have a swift II and am coming down with sinus infection. I just cleaned the mask with antibacterial soap and hot water, but is there something else I should do to keep me from re-infecting self?

oh also, how in HECK to sleep if my nose is stuffy?

Hi catbirdgirl,

I've read in soap studies that an antibacterial soap is not really necessary, and there was one published recently that hypothesizes that the increase in resistant bacteria might be due to overuse of antibacterial soaps (though they cannot really prove it). With normal soap, the contact time seems to be key - rub with soap for a minimum of 15? seconds (at least when washing hands). I suggest this because antibacterial soap is supposedly a no-no for washing masks, as it breaks down the mask material.

A nettie pot with lukewarm water, teaspoon of salt, and dash of baking soda is a good sinus rinse. (or a glass of water and spoon or palm of your hand to snort the water with.) There are already quite a few threads on this, might want to search for 'sinus rinse' or similar- i dont know the threads off the top of my head.

Alternately others use FF masks when they're stuffed up.
