Common virus linked to obesity
Common virus linked to obesity
"A common virus that causes cold and eye infections may also lead to obesity, according to research presented at the national meeting of the American Chemical Society.
Infection with human adenovirus-36 (Ad-36) seems to direct adult stem cells from fat tissue to turn into fat cells, researchers have found in lab experiments. Stem cells not exposed to the virus, in contrast, were unchanged.
More importantly, the researchers have identified the specific gene in the virus that appears to be involved in this obesity-promoting effect: E4Orfl."

Nothing about viruses surprises me. For decades pigs with stomach ulcers, which were not gaining weight fast enough, were treated with with bismuth subsalicylate and antibiotics. That cured ulcers in pigs and made them viable and profitable for marketing.
During those same decades they treated people with stomach ulcers with surgery and all manner of nasty drugs, and some really arcane and dangerous treatments.
The same virus, Helicobacter Pylori, that infected the pigs and caused the ulcers was discovered in the humans, and was the source of most stomach ulcers. Once they started, around the mid-1980's, treating people with antibiotics and bismuth subsalicylate they cured most stomach ulcers in people. All without so many needless, very risky and harmful surgeries.
They'll probably find that most cancers are exacerbated, or directly initiated by combinations of viruses, that are set into motion when they find damaged cells from chemical contamination and the numerous other factors that cause cell damage. Of course, heredity plays heavily into the mix. Ok, so that's far-fetched... but so was the concept of the earth circling the sun.
I wonder which virus keeps my bank accounts from growing fat.
