Card reader fit

Post by Julie » Tue Aug 21, 2007 4:10 am

Hi, I haven't used Encore in a lot of weeks as I've been moving and a lot of it's been very hectic. I just tried to use my card and while I can get EP up and SQL is green, my card reader stays red, the computer wants to 'install' the 'new' hardware (reader) but I'm not about to do it as I was told (having installed EP in the Windows 'side' of my iMac Intel, to not use the Mako disc, but instead use a link given by a friend - which worked at the time) - I just never took out the old Mako which had earlier been installed separately. I plugged in the reader directly to the back of my iMac and through a hub that's plugged in (used to use it all the time for EP with my eMac, plus do use it for my printer now). Anyhow, why would the reader suddenly not work today? Thanks.

Julie,

My answer would be......if it wants to go ahead and install the driver for that USB port, to go ahead and let it (assuming it's the correct one for the Encore Pro software and not one that came on the MAKO disk.....the proper one IS on the EP software disk).
The reason I say this is from experience. After almost 2 years of having mine plugged into a port in the back of my computer and dealing with it's "flakiness" of recognizing it, I tried plugging it into another port near the front (side) of the case and it's worked perfectly, every time, since then.

Good luck with yours.

Thank you very much, but it wants to install the card reader 'new hardware' and I followed it (without installing) far enough to see that it was the old Mako disc program it wanted to use - it's not about ports.

I'd still go ahead and let it. It won't "hurt" anything (worst case scenario).

1. Don't use a USB HUB, use a USB that directly hooks to the motherboard.

2. install the driver that's on the Encore Pro disk, with the reader unhooked, Or use the driver from the 2 Factors site, that's marked for Encore Pro.

3. use the same USB port all the time for the reader, if you can leave it hooked up all the time even better. Jim

When you have that particular (correct) driver installed, the "internals" should show it as a "2800.sys".
If it's NOT that one, then remove it and let it re-install the correct one.

As another has mentioned, some devices don't like USB hubs.

Also, some devices only like the first port, even though the others are in the computer. This port on my machines is right next to the LAN/Ethernet connector on the computer.

Insert the EP CD-Rom in the drive, point it to the CD when it asks, hit "Continue" when it says the driver is not compatible with Windows (none of the drivers for the SmartCard reader are, it is still USB 1.1 instead of 2.0).

IF you are using Parallels, man that has to be painfully slow, I tried Parallels, what a waste, I removed it all to save drive space.

Recent testing shows Parallels the worst performer. Virtual Box is supposed to have their USB ports working now under Tiger.

Make sure that SmartCard services are running under Windows, type in the Run box, Services.msc +[Enter], then Standard tab, scroll down to SmartCard services and make sure it is "Started", if not, right click and select Start.

Hi everyone - I took my life in my hands and did install the Mako disc - and it worked! I had been told not to use it when everything else was rigged up (and I don't know why I kept it, but TG I did!) so was afraid to do it, but it worked, so thank you all very much! No I'm not using Parallels (Boot Camp - a bit of a nuisance, but I'll live with it).
