update on xpap in tropical climate

Post by girlsaylor » Wed Aug 15, 2007 6:44 am

First off, I want to thank all who have offered suggestions on how to keep the mask on in the horrific summer heat in south FL.

We're trying to schedule A/C installation the end of this month, while I'm off the boat, visiting relatives. Means alot of work for me to get the boat ready for haulout, as we're having bottom work and painting done, as well as having men crawling all over inside to move the water heater, install instruments, and put in A/C, ductwork, and such. It will be oh so worth it though!

Now, I just hope I can get everything done before boarding that flight, lol. Cat just walked on my broken toe (ouchie), cleaned the bilge this morning. Will try to clean icebox today, and doing laundry in my Little Duck washer up in the cockpit.

Yesterday I had chest xray, EKG, and echocardiogram as follow-up to my pulmonary function testing 2 weeks ago. While I've lost a bit of ground as far as lung function goes, the pulmy doesn't think its that much to explain my complaints of shortness of breath and feeling like someone's standing on my chest. Last EKG showed sinus bradycardia, which may or may not be related to pre-bipap. Yesterday they found some arrhythmia, which has not shown up before. Could be totally benign or not. Also went for more bloodwork yesterday. Will call the pulmy for an appt to see what's the deal. If I can't get in this week, Thurs or Fri, won't be able to get in til mid-Sept, due to going out of town. But, hey, not cancelling the trip for test results that may or may not be read quickly.

Your post made me smile as I still haven't actually been through a summer on CPAP. Went from winter to spring to winter.

I'm really glad to see you sticking with it. I remember how frustrated you were when you came to this site, and I just want to say, "Well done."

Hey Blarg, thanks alot for the encouragement. Right now I'm dead in the water, so to speak, on prep for the trip and the haulout. Seems the city has our water shut off again. Was off all afternoon yesterday and early evening. We get no warning. Looks like they're working on a main somewhere. So, here we are in south FL with no water to take meds, no way to bathe or brush teeth to go to work, ugh. It's maddening, thinking of the health consequences. I've checked the local newspaper online, and no acknowledgement of the water being off, not how long, nothing. What the....

Ah well, I at least had a few hand wipes on hand after cleaning the cat's litter box, but still feels creepy to not be able to wash with good ole soap and water.

It's great to hear that you are getting the AC installed! I hope things go well with the trip and the whole process.

It gets even worse - no water!

Post by girlsaylor » Thu Aug 16, 2007 7:43 pm

Well, we've had no water the last couple of days. Seems the city turned off the water mains in the area to do some emergency repairs. They turned it back on last evening for a bit, then back off, so we know it was they who were responsible. Seems they came back into the company property and turned off a second valve. Now they claim they did not turn off the one for this half of the company (where we are docked), and that they are not responsible for our lack of water! They refuse to come out and use their special little tool to get to the in-ground valve and turn the water back on! So I've had only what water I can purchase at the grocery and carry down the dock. No baths, no nuttin. Tonight I made chicken salad sandwiches for dinner, to keep dishes down to a minimum. Hopefully they will sort it out tomorrow, as if they don't, we won't have water through the weekend either. and I'm trying to prep the boat for haulout and get myself ready to go out of town for 2 weeks. This is a total mess. Can't sleep, and now can't breathe in for fear of grossing myself out!
