Plain vs antibacterial soap

Post by tomjax » Thu Aug 16, 2007 8:52 am

This is a good article explaining that plain soap is just as effective as abtibacterial soap in preventing infections.

This is hardly news and is very well known.]
And what is the primary reason to use antibiotic ointment or soap on scrapes and minor wounds?

Prevent infections?
No, the body takes care of that jjust fine in most cases.
It is to promote healing, not prevent infection.Wounds heal much faster when the bacteria is killed.

Hi tomjax! A doctor once explained to me that just plain soap works by reducing the surface tension on the walls of bacteria cells, causing them to rupture. I think this is the main antibacterial function of all soaps, though soaps labeled as "antibacterial" contain other ingredients as well. The study suggests to me that the "other" ingredients don't really do much beyond what plan soap accomplishes.
