What is the bottom line? How you feel?

Post by meister » Wed Apr 13, 2005 3:01 pm

My AHI is 4.5, my friend's is 3.2, my cousin's is 0.3, my father's is 5.1, my
uncle's is 1.4, and my aunt's is 2.2. Is it really possible for you to detect
the difference between an AHI of 0.1 and an AHI of 4.1?? What is the
true measure of successful PAP treatment? No more nightly Oxygen
desats? I am struggling with an analytical approach to finding the
"perfect" combination given so many factors to change, like 1) drugs,
2) mask type, 3) machine pressure, 4) sleeping position, 5) room
temp, 6) humidifier level, 7) chin strap, .... on and on .... well you get
the picture. I burn lavender incense and listen to Bach before listening
to the sound of rain, and then eating my turkey sandwich, with my hot
milk, and soak in the hot tub, before taking my Ambien, then irrigating
my nasal pasages, sliding in my TAP, and putting on my mask ...

Man, I just want to crawl in bed and sleep!!!!

I am definitely at the stage in which I can "feel" a difference
after a night with an AHI of 4.9 versus one with an AHI of 1.1.

One doctor told me that anything under 10 is not worth treating.
Another doctor told me that anything under 5 is not worth treating.

Some of us are in search of the Perfect Zero score! My first
sleep doctor said "This is just a techie thing! Those technologists
end up prescribing too high of pressures in hopes of eliminating
all possible apneas! A few apneas each night are just fine!"

He would rather see a few obstructive apneas then a bunch of
Centrals caused by too high of a pressure.

meister, I'm gonna cast my vote with th. How YOU feel has GOT to be the ultimate measure of whether or not the therapy is working for you.

Everyone is different and, IMHO, everyone will have a different measure of success. If you keep focussing on getting "there", I think you're going to be miserable, cuz, if I've learned one thing in life, it's that "there" keeps getting moved when you get close!!

It sounds like you have an extended ritual before getting to sleep. As for me, I brush my teeth, take my daily medicines, including an ocassional 1/2 Melatonin tablet or an Arthritis PM OTC, go to bed and read for about 20 minutes, put on my mask, turn off the light and BAM! I'm out like a light.

I'm a rather technical, scientific sort of guy and decided when I got on this therapy, I wasn't going to over-analyze things. I WAS going to give it a fair chance, but without my usual analytical, check every number, get it down to zero, graph everything in site, etc behavior. And you know what? It worked! I am feeling wonderful after 2 months.

Hang in there and lighten up if you can. And remember, only YOU can prevent forest fires...........errrrrr, only YOU can be the judge of YOUR success. (Sorry, got confuzzled! LOL)

Good luck!
