Am I cured? (post tonsillectomy)

Post by VancouverBreeze » Sun Apr 17, 2005 12:15 am

Hello,

As some of you might have seen I posted a few weeks ago about my impending (at the time) tonsillectomy.

Now, on the otherside of that AGONY, something that even my ENT Doc did not promise, some good things seem to be emerging. I think it's important for me to say here that surgury to cure apnea is NOT the way to go, low probability etc. And if you want to talk pain, talk adult tonsilectomy.

After the surgury, my doc said I had "the largest tonsils" he'd seen in 20 years of practice. For the first week or so, my throat was too sore to even think about using my cpap. Furthermore, because of the pain medication (morphine, perciset(sp?) that I was on, I was having some fantastically DEEP sleeps! And no snoring. Even now, two weeks later, no snoring, I wake up feeling great, and not tired at all.

Obviously, I will need to talk to my sleep doctor, and maybe do another sleep study, but, dare I think my apnea may be gone? Should I use CPAP even though I don't snore, and my wife says I don't wake up gasping for air like I used to before I went on CPAP?

Thanks all for your views!

Darren,

That's great!
I was wondering if losing the tonsils as an adult helps in other ways, like reducing the number and severity of colds, etc. I had mine removed as a child, and my colds were reduced. Of course, it's still early for you to tell.

I hope this does cure your sleep apnea. Sounds like there's hope for that, given the fact that your tonsils had gotten so big and were likely causing so much of the obstructions. I hope it is a permanent solution. But you are smart to plan to followup with your sleep doctor and to consider another sleep test, after you've fully recovered from surgery and have gotten back to normal. You are wise, listening to your wife for feedback on how you are sleeping. Sounds like you're really working on your health. Good going! Keep us posted!
